  • Adults-only site in the centre of Thorganby village
  • A 25-minute drive to York or 35 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Bus stop nearby for services to York
An easy pace of country living is the essence of this adults-only site in rural North Yorkshire. Country Living Campsite is in a top location in the centre of Thorganby village, an attractive spot with direct bus services into York city centre (Monday to Saturday; please note that there is no bus service on bank holidays). The site has a limited number of pitches and only adults are allowed, so the whole place has a quiet, relaxed vibe that's great for laidback country holidays. Settle into this slower pace of rural life by taking a walk on one of the many footpaths that crisscross the local countryside or by simply sitting back and appreciating the open views, wildlife and spectacular sunsets. If you’re minded to travel further afield, this site is within easy reach of major routes, so you can easily access destinations like York (25 minutes' drive), Castle Howard (35 minutes), the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes), and Yorkshire's gorgeous east coast (an hour and five minutes).

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Quiet little site. Really peaceful. Nice for walks. Deer about half a mile away roaming free. Decent pub in weldrake about 2miles away. And a couple more about 4miles. Takeaway will deliver to site. Trip to York Center only £2 on the bus very easy to do. The host Lesley was very nice and helpful.

Disliked: Local pub has closed which is a shame as it was very close to site but don’t let that put you off staying here

Electric optional grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Quiet, friendly host, good walks from the site, and nature reserve practically next door. Reasonable weekday and Saturday bus service into York.

Disliked: It was a pity that the village pub was shut (but nothing host could do about that), and that no buses into York on a Sunday. Not a dislike, but may need a longer hose to connect to water tap.

Route directions

After going past the few houses at the top of the lane, look for the site entrance on the left, near a large oak tree. Please take it slowly as the lane is a no-through road and it's tricky to turn round on if you miss the entrance. (If you do miss the entrance you will need to continue for about a mile then use the track at the end to turn around.)

Local attractions

The biggest boon of this site is its quiet countryside location coupled with its proximity to transport connections that take you out to some of North Yorkshire's best spots. Historic York has a fab café culture and packed cultural events calendar, and is also a particularly tiptop spot for those holidaymakers who are partial to an abundance of old buildings, monuments and museums. Learn about Vikings at the Jorvik Centre, take a wander around the National Railway Museum or visit the country's biggest independent air museum; York Minster and York Castle Museum are another two of the city's absolute must-sees. Outside York, both Harrogate and Leeds are around an hour’s drive away from Country Living Campsite and jam-packed with historic highlights and a lot of independent local shops and restaurants. Castle Howard can be reached within just over half an hour too. Towards Hull, immerse yourself in the exhibits of award-winning aquarium, The Deep, where seven species of shark swim among the countless other sea creatures that roam the centre's numerous aquarium tanks.
