  • Directly opposite a bus stop; two minutes' walk from a bakery
Whether you're Union, League or neither of the above, the sporting folk down at Greensfield Alnwick Rugby Club Campsite will gladly have you to stay at this well-kept Northumberland site. This site is home to just the kind of well-tended grounds that you'd expect from a community sports pitch; it has a fab location on the edge of Alnwick and is an easy 20-minute drive from the coast. This well-preserved market town is perhaps best known for Alnwick Castle, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Northumberland where much of the Harry Potter series was shot (it's also masqueraded as Downton Abbey and appeared in a Transformers flick). The spectacular castle and its grounds are a mere 20-minute stroll from this well-located site. Back at base, there's a bunch of spacious pitches where you can set up your gear. Large groups can be accommodated here – let the site staff know you're coming and they'll happily settle you in together on their training ground. A clubhouse, where many a club victory has been boozily celebrated, is also on hand. Handily, Greensfield Alnwick Rugby Club Campsite is directly opposite a bus stop, where you can hitch a ride down to the coast or venture further north to Berwick-upon-Tweed. It's also a couple of minutes' walk from a bakery and five minutes from a supermarket and fish and chip shop.

Local attractions

Above and beyond the town's fab castle, there's much to admire around these historic streets. The Alnwick Garden (20 minutes' walk) is likely to appeal to green-fingered sorts – fountains, water sculptures, bamboo labyrinths, rose gardens and a grove of poisonous plants can all be found here. The town is also home to Barter Books (10 minutes' walk), one of Britain's largest second-hand bookshops where bibliophiles can browse the titles in a converted Victorian station. The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes' drive) will be a prime pick for cyclists, who are pretty sure to appreciate the many miles of quiet lanes and off-road bike trails around Alnmouth (15 minutes). Windier spots like Bamburgh (30 minutes), meanwhile, are also nearby for those partial to board sports. Off-shore jaunts to the scenic Farne Islands can be sorted in Seahouses (25 minutes). You may well want to book yourself onto one of Billy Shiel's Boat Trips – this family-run business has been taking folks out to see the Farnes for over a hundred years, so they'll have plenty of seafaring stories to tell during the crossing.
