  • Friendly well-maintained park on the banks of Wooler Water
  • Lounge bar, restaurant and entertainment in peak season
  • A 10-minute walk to the medieval market town of Wooler
Avoid the hordes crawling to the south-west coast and breeze your way to a little gem on the edge of the Northumberland National Park instead… Riverside Country Park is a friendly, well-maintained site on the banks of Wooler Water, with plenty to appeal to the whole family: perhaps pottering around the riverbanks and stunning woodland, splashing about in the indoor swimming pool, baiting rods for a bit of fly fishing, or a few rounds of pool in the games room. The park has good essential amenities, including a lounge bar and restaurant with Sky Sports and BT Sports, a shop, launderette, play area and entertainment over peak season.

Liked: We had a lovely stay, the facilities on the site are clean and everything we needed. We didn't go into the family bar or the swimming pool so I can't comment. The site is a short walk into the town which has a few shops and bars. This is our second stay and we will defiantly be back

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location, friendly, helpful staff at reception, low cost.

Disliked: Black and grey waste disposal needs updating. I have never been so alarmed at a risk of black waste splashback, and the grey waste is a "bucket it from the pitch" arrangement - a right pain when the MoHo is designed for a drive over grille. The weather was bad, but there was a lot of mud around - probably better if the weather is good.

Liked: Hot water in washing up area is free. Man behind the bar was very friendly.

Disliked: Campsite was dirty. Mud was everywhere. You couldn’t walk around without walking through thick mud. Even the roads were covered in it. It was a quagmire. They need to address this issue. The washing up area had two sinks, but only one plug! So only one person could wash up at a time! The taps are set right back against the windows so that when you ran them half the water went in the sink and the other half just ran back and soaked the window frames. Said frames were, obviously, rotten. There was filth and dirt all around the sinks too. The toilet area was dirty. I sat on the toilet and the seat slid to one side. It wasn’t even fixed on properly! The hand driers are useless so I just dried my hands on my clothing. Also, the toilets smelled. The toilet waste area was dirty and depressing. While we were emptying the toilet cassette a cleaner came past. No good morning, no smile, she just pushed past us looking miserable - and very scruffy. We called in to look at the ‘restaurant’. Gosh, what a dire depressing place. Two (!) TVs were on - really loud! I asked the man behind the bar if they stayed on during the evening too, and he said yes. So that was that. We didn’t go there. The menu was the usual rubbish anyway. All geared for families with children. If you don’t have children, don’t bother going. If you do have children, don’t bother going. There are nice campsites out there. Avoid this campsite and find somewhere else. Oh - and the Wi-Fi didn’t work either! It was quicker to just work with 4g.

Liked: Riverside pitch, good walking area , short walk into Wooler. Staff were great.

Disliked: Only 3 toilets & 3 showers for large touring area which was quite full. Toilet bin not emptied from Friday to Sunday morning at least and it was full with dirty nappy on top.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly receptionist on arrival. Superb location adjacent to Wooler - walking distance. Heated toilet block.

Disliked: Toilet block tired and in need of updating - old shower cubicles. No hooks to hang clothes or towels by the washbasins or in male toilet cubicles. Recycling area not cleaned and not clearly marked for paper/cardboard and/or Tins. Awful Wi-Fi - did not work at all.

Local attractions

Trip-trap over the bridge from Riverside Country Park to Wooler, a pretty medieval market town with some alluring eateries, pubs and shops, and the ideal starting point for walks into the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. Cycling, fishing, golfing and horse riding fans will also find rich pickings nearby. If you haven’t explored the Northumberland coastline before, you’re in for a treat. Expect atmospheric ancient edifices in spectacular surroundings, such as Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne; seaside villages like Seahouses, where you can jump aboard a sea safari boat to the Farne Islands; and miles and miles of nature reserves and wide sandy beaches. You can follow Hadrian’s Wall westbound from its start point in Wallsend, stopping off at Roman forts in scenic settings as you head in the direction of Carlisle; travel along peaceful country roads to explore the Scottish borders; or south to visit Alnwick Castle and the Alnwick Garden, contemporary gardens with one of the world’s biggest treehouses. For city lights, hit the A1 for an easy ride to Newcastle and Gateshead, both buzzing with culture (try the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art or a gig at the Sage Concert Hall), museums, football, restaurants, nightlife and shops; or head further north for a day trip to the many-splendoured delights of Edinburgh.
