There are few things better than a camping mini-break, and one of those is a camping mini-break with a pub right next door. And that’s where The Waggon and Horses site comes in, set in a field behind its namesake pub in the quiet Cheshire village of Eaton. And so, what of the pub? Well, lucky old you, as it’s a cosy one, where you can gather around the log fire and tuck into locally sourced dishes for lunch and dinner as well as yummy Sunday roasts. On summer days there’s a beer garden with a barbecue menu, and everywhere is dog friendly, so your best pal can come too. If they’ve behaved in the pub, treat dogs and kids to a romp around Astbury Mere Country Park (10 minutes’ drive), and there’s a fishing lake stocked with carp and perch there too, on the site of a former sand quarry. The National Trust-owned Lyme (40 minutes) has formal gardens and a deer park to roam, and of course, you can drive on into the Peak District National Park (30 minutes) for fantastic walks across open moorland. Simple facilities back at The Waggon and Horses campsite include public loos and a shower block.

Local attractions

Stately piles abound in Cheshire, so take your pick of a visit to the 18th-century chapel at Capesthorne Hall (10 minutes’ drive), or the wonderfully crooked Little Moreton Hall, a half-timbered and moated manor house (15 minutes) – and in the Old Hall at Tatton Park (35 minutes), you can all pretend to be medieval knights and stage a joust. Soak up the fresh air on yomps along Biddulph Valley Way (10 minutes), an untaxing spot for kids as it follows a former railway line, or head out into the Peak District National Park for serious hikes along the Pennine Way. There’s a handful of golf courses within a 15-minute drive, and on the odd rainy day, you can head for the swimming pool at Congleton Leisure Centre (10 minutes). Another local landmark you might like to check out is Jodrell Bank Observatory (15 minutes), where you can stroll around the base of the massive Lovell Telescope and take the kids hunting for aliens.
