  • Peaceful site with views over Eskdale and Wasdale valleys
  • Half an hour's drive from the seaside town of Whitehaven
  • Fenced paddocks and stabling facilities for horse owners
Escape to Eskdale… or Wasdale… or Ravenglass – Parkgate Farm Holidays is within easy reach of lots of the prettiest places in Cumbria's Western Lakeland. You don’t even have to exit the site to start taking in those views, for there’s a rather fine outlook from this peaceful farm over the Eskdale and Wasdale valleys, with fields and forests thrown in to the frame too. Tempted to take a closer look? Fell walkers can stride forth directly from the farm, while more intrepid types scramble up Scafell Pike, half an hour away. Should you tire of the endlessly gorgeous lakeland views, a 10-minute drive will take you to the beaches of the north-west coast for a bit of seaside scenery. Got a horse that needs a bit of a holiday too? The farm’s sheep and donkeys are friendly bunch, so you’re welcome to bring your hoofed pal along for the ride for a small extra charge. Fenced paddocks and comfy stables await on site, and there are loads of trails to trot along nearby. All the farm’s units are kitted out with fully-equipped kitchens; if you don’t fancy cooking there are a couple of country pubs within 10 minutes’ drive.

Electric grass and earth pitch (XL)

Liked: It's a farm land, off road track to it,reflecting that fact. Our pitch no.7 was spacious enough for caravan&awning. Van parked infront of caravan. We had a quite large grass patch allocated with picnic bench. So, there was a plenty privacy between us and our next door neighbour. However, to get the caravan set up, we had to push it up a little bit as incline is steep. Same coming off the pitch , steep decline. Luckily, caravan breaks held well. But as soon as you all set up, couple of bricks to straight caravan up...the views are spectacular. It's so peaceful and quiet. My humble opinion, pitch is perfect for motorhomes, tents. Caravans? Do need a little bit of elbow grease to put into it but it will worth. A large grass area in the middle of site is great for chilling, my son spent there every free time. Rolling down the hill, kicking a ball, running around. Relaxing place. You can rent bbq/log burners&buy logs on site.Smell of fire just belongs to this place. Family washrooms (3 piece bathroom) are big enough for 2 adults&child. Very clean. Water pressure just nice. WiFi provided, just doesn't reach everywhere. Short, pleasant walk path around the site. There are some (hooman)friendly donkeys in lower field. Perfect place to stay if exploring West Lakes. Drigg Beach, Ravenglass, Whiteheaven, Muncaster Castle...all within 20 minutes ish drive. "We" are keen fishing family, you see... Wardens are present on site. Friendly couple. Happy to help. I would stay there again. Maybe when rain gets warmer... .

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike. Maybe just naturally moan about...

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Couldn’t have been more welcoming 🙂 A lovely, small traditional site in its first year. Only nine tent pitches (some with EHU), plus some gorgeous funky lodges and a little cabin. It is set up more for tents and motorhomes than caravans, which is a big plus for us. Great views over Whin Rigg and up to Harter Fell and the loos and showers are spotless. A big thank you to the site wardens, Bruce and Sandy - so friendly and helpful, coming over to check everything is ok and just making it a nice place to be 🙂

Disliked: Push button shower valve! Please just change the valve to a longer shut off interval - 30 seconds would be fine, 10 seconds is ridiculous, but for the love of God… 5 seconds?! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Non-electric grass and earth pitch

Liked: Personally greeted when I arrived onsite Facilities were spotless It was peaceful and quiet throughout the evening Wifi was available at pitch side

Disliked: Pitch was very muddy due to poor weather, no fault of the owners and I was advised to park on gravel which meant I didn't get stuck which I did. Would definitely look to return in the summer when dry

Electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Great views and facilities such as toilets and showers, went it winter time so was abit cold in them. Little football pitch with play equipment in facilities area.

Disliked: Pitch spaces were grass so we got stuck a couple times as it was abit wet. Staff helped us out so wasn't to bad. So if you have a big vehicle I wouldn't recommend parking on grass.

Local attractions

Legs a little worn out from walking/biking/riding? Take a scenic trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway – there’s a station half a mile from Parkgate Farm, or you can board at Ravenglass, 10 minutes' drive away to ride the whole route. While you’re in Ravenglass, take a mooch round Muncaster Castle, a privately owned fort overlooking the River Esk. As well as tours round the castle there are also heaps of things for kids here, including an enchanted fairy trail, a maze and hawk displays. Golfing types can swing their clubs on the courses in Eskdale or Seascale (be prepared for potentially distracting sea views at the latter). There’s a sandy beach in Seascale too; if the water’s too chilly for swims, head north to Whitehaven (half an hour away) to the public swimming pool. The Rum Story, an exhibition in an original 1785 shop, is worth a visit up here too (and yes, you can buy bottles of the good stuff).
