  • Single ensuite camping pod in a Cumbrian wildlife haven
  • 15 minutes' walk from the medieval village of Cartmel
  • With wetroom, heater, Freeview TV and fridge
A stand-alone pod in the Cumbrian countryside, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, near the Yorkshire Dales National Park and only three miles from the coast at Grange-over-Sands is what one might call perfectly placed – and that’s before one adds in its proximity to medieval village Cartmel, famed home of the famed (in sensible dwellings at least) sticky toffee pudding. Set 15 minutes' walk from Cartmel, this is a wildlife haven site, with locals like buzzards, herons, deer, badgers and rare flutterbys all spottable in the locale because of its mild climate and valley position (the park is also an award-winner for its approach to wildlife and its conservation policy, so if you’re a nature nut, ask knowledgeable owner Dave for good areas to spot). It's just one pod on site all to guests’ own very selves, meaning that those who savour solitude should find things sweet. The lodge sleeps four in two single beds and two bunks, and has a table, chairs and cooking area outside, a kettle, fridge, heater and Freeview TV, and an indoor wetroom with shower, toilet and sink. Parking is podside for extra convenience. Outside, plonk yourself down in the seating section for some plonk while drinking in the views; there’s a cooking area too to watch the other half dishing up dinner. For those who don’t think holidays are a time for cooking, there are two excellent food pubs, the Royal Oak and the Kings Arms, less than a mile away in Cartmel. Sweet…

Route directions

From Junction 36 - M6 Leave the M6 and take the A590 signposted Barrow. After 3 miles the road changes to the A591 (signposted for Kendal). At this point, leave that dual carriageway and follow the signs for Barrow. At the roundabout, follow the B5277 going through the town of Grange and then the village of Allithwaite. Take a sharp left onto Templand Lane, turn right into The Pastures, turn in at the first right and the camping pod is on the left-hand side. Park outside and the key will be in the door inside the pod.

Local attractions

Whether you’re into activities or attractions, there’s much to see and do crammed into this area: stick to the local villages and walking routes, explore the Lake District, take to the water for sailing and surfing, cruise around the coast or stride around the Yorkshire Dales (and bring your camera; these are all sites of spectacular scenery). Cartmel village is popular with visitors of all ilks too: the 12th-century Priory Church of St Mary and St. Michael founded by Augustine monks is its most popular attraction, has regular events and concerts and sees over 60,000 visitors a year (there’s also a monthly food market in its grounds selling fresh local produce and goods). Cartmel Racecourse also pulls in big crowds for its size on its May and August bank holiday meets – and you do know that Cartmel is the place to pick up (lots of) sticky toffee pudding…? As well as Cartmel, those who want to leave the car behind will find enough in the area to do: famous Holker Hall and Gardens once belonged to Cartmel’s Priory and is one of the best-known historic houses in Cumbria. It’s within walking distance and there are more walks around its gorgeous gardens (the Cavendish Walk to the Sunken Garden is suitable for wheelchairs and prams). The holiday resort Grange-over-Sands is three miles away, as are the seven islands of Morecambe Bay, including the nature haven Walney Island which has a bird observatory, two nature reserves and two sandy beaches to rockpool at. If you’re more driven, a car ride of five miles or so will land you at Backbarrow for the Lakeland Motor Museum and Campbell Legend Bluebird Exhibition and around 30,000 exhibits assembled over five decades. Ulverston, a market town with local produce on sale twice weekly, is also about five miles away.
