  • Peaceful scenic Lake District site three miles from Keswick
  • Excellent base for walks at Skiddaw, Catbells and Derwentwater
  • Pubs, shops, bus stops and hiking trails within walking distance
Heading to the Lake District for handsome scenery and hikes? Hotfoot it to Cumbria’s lovely Lanefoot Farm, in a fab location between the little villages of Thornthwaite and Braithwaite (both within a 15-minute walk for local shops and pubs), and a five-minute drive from the bigger town of Keswick. Plenty of everyday essentials can be taken care of on site – there’s an information point stacked with local maps and leaflets, a drying room to sort your kit if you’ve been caught in a downpour and a small shop supplied with vital bits and bobs (including wood for the campfire, marshmallows to poke into the flames and ingredients for a tasty breakfast). The site’s toilet block has well-kept toilets and showers, and underfloor heating to avoid chilly toes of a morning. With all these necessities sorted, it’s time to turn your focus on the scenery: Lanefoot Farm has gorgeous views over the surrounding fells towards Skiddaw, the Helvellyn range and Catbells, among others. If you’d rather see them from closer quarters, you’ll be chuffed to hear that they’re all easily accessed with a short drive, as are other Lake District faves including Whinlatter Forest, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake. In excellent news for folk travelling without a car, some fells, such as Grisedale Pike and Lord's Seat, can be reached on foot from the farm. Nearby Thornthwaite is the place to pick up the C2C National Cycle Route or flag down a bus to Keswick, Penrith or Cockermouth.

Local attractions

Where to start with all the fab things to see and do in the Lake District? Well, if you’re a walker perhaps with a canter up Catbells (10 minutes’ drive), as a warm-up for an attempt to summit the 931 metres of Skiddaw (20 minutes). Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes) is good for a stroll if you’re after something a tad less strenuous. And if you fancy a few different outdoorsy days? Perhaps an outing to the marina at Derwentwater for sailing or canoeing (or cruises for lazier days), or to Whinlatter Forest Park, where daredevils can take to the downhill mountain bike trails or zoom along the ziplines at the Go Ape adventure park. Both are about five minutes away by car. There’s some excellent local wildlife to be spotted all around this area, of course, but it’s also worth a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) to see a few things that are rather more exotic. If the weather’s a little damp round the edges (it happens…), drive to Keswick (five minutes) for theatre shows, shopping and the pencil museum. Or you could take refuge in the brewery, of course…
