  • Remote location but with easy access to the Lake District and Cumbria
  • In a walker's paradise in the Dovedale Valley
  • Modern facilities and well-stocked shop
The placing of this Penrith park is pretty perfect. Get ready for Lake District and Cumbrian valley walks in sublime surroundings, at this friendly site in a walker's paradise at the northern foot of the Kirkstone Pass. Although it's listed as in a remote location and is set deep and quietly in the Dovedale Valley, Sykeside Camping Park is easily accessible to the best of the Lake District and Cumbria, as it's just off the A592 and is no more than half an hour's drive from Ullswater, Patterdale, Glenridding, Ambleside, Coniston and Keswick. Cruising around Windermere is about 20 minutes away. Sykeside's Dovedale Valley locale has it surrounded by Dove Crag, Hart Crag and Fairfield, and with the town of Brotherswater nearby. Short strolls around Brotherswater are among the walky local options, or you could have a longer hike from the town's high street, where many walks start. (Or take the also most pleasant option of just staying in town and seeking out your holiday local the Brotherswater Inn for a pint or two of regional ale among the splendid regional scenery.) The Sykeside team has set the site out carefully to blend in with its surroundings and make the most of its natural settings, but have added modern amenities to keep guests comfy, like the shower and toilet facilities with shaving points and power points, and the laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and washing-up area. Feel free to set yourself up here to ignore the rest of the outside world: the well-stocked shop sells most of what you might need including fresh food, camping equipment, maps and guides; and because of the site's position right at the bottom of the valley, telly reception is pretty unreliable and you'll not get a single bar on your mobile – did someone mention digital detox…?

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views from the campsite are amazing. The staff are available and happy to help. The dishwashing and bathroom facilities are clean and warm. The campsite shop stocks everything you might need. We liked the fact that there is a pub onsite and were particularly impressed that the chef put lots of effort into putting together a vegan dessert on request.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite, beautiful views and stunning walks straight from camp, was nice to not have to get in the car all weekend with the on site shop too.

Disliked: No dislikes, there was a little noise from one tent near us but the owner came round to check on us in the morning so that was nice

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The on site shop was great, as you are some way from any other local store

Disliked: Camping on the site make sure you have some heavy duty tent pegs as some of the areas are so hard you bend your pegs up.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely lovely camping grounds. We picked a perfect spot considering the campsite filled up quite quickly over our stay. The views are insanely beautiful and the facilities were in an amazing condition. Would 100% stay again.

Disliked: One of the staff members had a slight abruptness to him but seemed fairly helpful. The tokens for the washing facilities are located in the pub towards the front of the campsite so in the rain it's not very convenient to go to. The drying time needs to be more for the price or the price needs to be reduced for the time given.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Welcoming and lots of information for the shop and Brotherswater inn. I didn’t use the shower facilities but the toilets were well kept. Will definitely visit again. You are warned it’s a signal dead spot at the tent pitches but you can connect to WiFi at the pub only.

Disliked: Being a lone traveller, the trek to and from the was a pain but once set up no problems. I brought a dog with me and I couldnt take him in the toilets which was bit of a panic every time.
