  • Small quiet site set on a working farm in the Western Lake District
  • Close to mountain and coastal walks
  • Near the Hawk & Owl Centre at Muncaster
Come to Cumblands Farm Caravan Site in the western Lake District to be close to mountain and coastal walks, cycling and long days exploring the surrounds before evenings chilling out among smashing sunsets and the sounds of local birds… (And if birds are your bag, you might like to flit to the nearby Hawk & Owl Centre at Muncaster.) As might be expected around the Lake District, these are fab views around Cumblands Farm and the vibe is one of simple countryside serenity; this is a small and very friendly site on a working farm and just the ticket for soothing hols. It's about a mile's walk via the nearby beach to the local village of Ravenglass. Cumblands Farm has charging facilities, chemical disposal and a small shower and loo block with plenty of hot water. And as might be hoped in a region with walkies all around, this is a dog-friendly place – look out for the friendly farm dogs while you're there.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Perfect small farm in the lovely quiet countryside. Mike was a great, helpful host who went out of his way to assist us with a few problems we had with our hired campervan.

Disliked: Site was quite muddy and wet after heavy rains so could be problematic for larger, heavier campervans.

Liked: This has been the best trip in our van to date... the site has all the basics that you would need along with the most incredible views and the novelty of staying on a working farm. The owner is extremely friendly and accommodating, helping us with everything we needed, advising us on best places to visit and even giving us a little tour of his animals! We came at Easter and he even came out with some eggs for the kids and offered to show us a new born calf. I could not rate this site highly enough, the owners absolutely made this trip surpass any expectations we had. We're so sad to leave but I think a return visit in the future is definitely due. Brilliant!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Tremendous views of Scafell Pike and surrounding fells, wonderfully peaceful spot, enjoyed the sound of lambs baaing and cockerels crowing, and only a stone’s throw to estuary, mudflats, Eskdale trail. Mike was very welcoming, interesting us with stories about nearby Wast Water and the astonishing number of foxes on some Lake District estates.

Disliked: The shower hut was labelled as very basic, and it is- it functions, but definitely no frills.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Stayed 2 nights on a working farm. 30 mins walk into ravenglass, which was lovely. As the weather wasn't great we needed a tow when we were leaving. Mike sorted us out straight away. Couldn't fault him. Yes the facilities are basic but we knew this from other reviews and didn't put us off. If you come across the 2 goats, they will follow you but only to the end of the farm. We didn't know this at the time so tried to fence them in but guess what they can jump really high. Contacted Mike who again sorted them out 🙂 will definitely stay again but in better weather

Disliked: Nothing

Route directions

Please note that satnavs can take unusual routes, so it's best to follow these instructions. From the A595, take the turning signed Saltcoates. Continue down the road, past a farm on your right. Slow down as you approach the blind bend. As you come out of the bend there is a farm track on your left: this is the entrance to Cumblands Farm. Drive up the lane and follow the road around the boundary of the garden to the site.

Local attractions

Lakes, mountains, beaches and miles of walking paths and cycling trails are all within a short distance of Cumblands Farm Caravan Site, as well as heritage highlights like Muncaster Castle and the ruins of the Roman fort near Hardknott. Whitehaven harbour is a short drive away. The local village of Ravenglass (the only coastal settlement in the whole of the Lake District National Park) was occupied by toga types in the second century when it was used as a vital Roman naval base; the remains of the Roman baths form one of the biggest remaining Roman structures in England. Ravenglass is also the starting point for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway running the seven miles to Dalegarth in the Eskdale valley and passing the Hardknott Roman fort, the Boot and Muncaster watermills and Muncaster Castle. If you reckon your legs can stand it, hike up nearby Hardknott Pass, one of the two steepest paths in all of England (the other is Rosedale Chimney Bank in North Yorkshire) for views of the Isle of Man and access to the also fairly tough terrain of Wrynose Pass which leads to the Three Shire Stone where the historic counties of Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland meet. Viking artefacts including the tallest and oldest Viking cross in England are at the nearby village of Gosforth four miles away.
