City lights, city sights…and tranquil nature reserve? Canny caravanners can grab the best of both worlds at Marton Mere Holiday Village in Blackpool, set on its own lakeside nature reserve with park ranger station, yet a Mere three miles from the Pleasure Beach and bright lights of Blackpool. You can even see Blackpool Tower from Marton Mere, which might be the closest you get to it given the jam-packed options on this Haven site: there are sports activities such as rollerblading, adventure golf, football coaching, fencing and archery (qualified coaches are on hand to ensure blades and bows are wielded safely). Young Bear Grylls in the making can get stuck into the wildly entertaining Nature Rockz activities run at the park where they can enjoy all sorts from bushcraft to building shelters, beachcombing to bug safaris. (Most activities are free but a small charge may apply to some.) And there’s a heated indoor pool with SplashZone and new Space Bowl flume (with an outdoor SplashZone for the kids too during summer); kids’ clubs with the Seaside Squad; the ShowBar for drinks and dancing, and day and night entertainment for all ages – we like the sound of the Summer Mania Wrestling and the family ‘wake ‘n’ shake’ sessions… If your tastes are more reserved, the Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve on the edge of the park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with habitats to explore beyond your berth: there are wetland, woodland and grassland spots among others, hosting an array of critters including dragonflies, bats and butterflies, or you could go undercover in one of the bird hides to spot soaring peregrines, merlins, owls and ospreys. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, the site has a café bar and grill with terrace on site to sup at for breakfast, lunch, dinner and essential snacks, a fish and chip shop – again for essential snacks – and a Spar for stocking up on freshly baked bread, barbecue nosh and other bits and bobs.

Local attractions

We’ll start off with Blackpool – assuming you make it off site for a day or two; as well as the famous Tower, shows, circus, autumn Illuminations and whirling around the rides on the Pleasure Beach, you can ogle the folk at Blackpool Zoo or the Sea Life Centre, get waxy at Madame Tussauds or make a splash at the Sandcastle Waterpark, the biggest indoor waterpark in the country. If you’re out of energy after the SplashZone and Summer Mania Wrestling, more wrestful options in the area include gentle horseback cantering, angling for fish or linking up with the several golf courses around: Staining Lodge Golf Course is a mile and a half from Marton Mere and the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club is within a short drive (there’s a nature reserve here too). Knights and hangers-on (parents) should have a ball at Chorley’s Camelot Theme Park, while younger adventurers will enjoy The World of Beatrix Potter at nearby Bowness or Farmer Parrs Animal World; if your youngsters are into their history – or going underground – there’s a good day out at Keswick’s Honister Slate Mine too. The Lake District is also within easy reach: cruise along for a trip on Lake Windermere and a visit to the adventure playground, exhibitions and gorgeous gardens at the Lake District Visitor Centre, or have a puff on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway along the banks of the River Leven. The Forest of Bowland, Beacon Fell Country Park and the historic city of Lancaster can all be had within a Mere half hour drive.
