  • Peaceful park in the Ribble Valley, with views of Pendle Hill
  • Within 50 mins' drive of Forest of Bowland, Pendle and Yorkshire Dales
  • Weekend bar; a five-minute drive from Clitheroe's markets and castle
Here’s a challenge: see how many national parks, popular peaks, ancient ruins and nature reserves you can get round while staying at Shireburn Park (hint: it’s a seriously large number). This quiet caravan park is five minutes' drive from the Lancashire town of Clitheroe, with the outdoor spaces of the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales, the Forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill all less than an hour away. Even closer are the woodlands and gardens back at base, visited by owls, willow warblers and nuthatches, as well as being home to a family of deer... plus views of Pendle Hill as a backdrop too. Luxurious caravan living’s the thing here: all are cosily double glazed, with a bathroom, kitchen and flatscreen TV. (Even better, the doors open onto a decked verandah so you can revel in those Lancashire vistas all day long.) In the grounds is the Victorian manor house of Shireburn Hall, where a small bar serves drinks on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons and a pool table caters to those of competitive spirit. If you like mooching round markets, Clitheroe hosts three a week, and as a stopoff on the Ribble Valley Food Trail, it’s a tempting spot for pub lunches and picnics around the ruins of the 12th-century castle.

Local attractions

For walks and tales of witches, Pendle Hill is half an hour's drive away and paths up to the top start from Barley. To learn about those infamous 17th-century witch trials, head to the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford. Bremettenacum, or Ribchester (20 minutes) as it’s known now, is the top spot for Roman history around here: the baths and the granaries are landmarks in this former garrison town and the museum is full of intriguing finds. Fancy feeding lambs, stroking chicks or supervising a meerkat’s mealtime? Bowland Wild Boar Adventure Park also 20 minutes away has many fluffy creature encounters, along with tractor rides... and of course boars. For wilder nature wanderings, beetle over to Brockholes Nature Reserve (half an hour), a patchwork of habitats on a former quarry site, where ospreys, otters and bitterns can be spotted amongst the reedbeds. It’s the same distance to Gisburn Forest Hub, centre of a network of walking and biking trails through the Trough of Bowland. If you’re more into mountains, the Yorkshire Dales' famed Three Peaks are easily reached and scaled from Ingleton, 50 minutes away. Alternatively, go low with wanders of the White Scar Caves just outside Ingleton, a subterranean labyrinth of caverns and tunnels, geological oddities and waterfalls. If you want the views without the effort, you can see the very best of the Ribble valley from a seat on the Settle-Carlisle Railway; Settle is 40 minutes away.
