  • Family-friendly luxury glampsite on a farm at Dolphinholme, Lancashire
  • A 35-minute drive to Bowland Wild Boar Park; 45 minutes to Blackpool
  • Spacious safari tents with private showers; playground and animals
Fancy the sound of spectacular countryside, farm animals and outdoor fun combined with a great big slice of under-canvas luxury? Then you should be considering a stay at Feather Down Farm – Dolphinholme Farm in the village of Dolphinholme. For here, you can enjoy views across the Lancashire fells; cows, goats and horses in neighbouring fields; playgrounds for the kids; and – best of all – well-equipped safari tents. In these tents there’s bags of space for family, friends and the dog, cosy separate seating and dining areas, and well-kitted out kitchens. Other bonuses include proper beds with mega-comfy mattresses, private flushing toilets and hot showers. There’s lots of storage for all your gear too – but please note, there is no electricity or wifi in the safari tents; they are lit by candles and oil lamps and heated by woodburning stoves. For that added dash of luxury you can add hot tub hire to your booking as well… If you should need to restock foodie supplies, there’s a shop (and a restaurant, if you’re feeling a tad lazy) at the pub in Dolphinholme (five minutes’ drive). So the kids can have a run around, paddle in the River Wyre (which runs through the farmland) and build dens in the woodland safely, cars are not allowed by the pitches. A designated parking area is a few minutes’ walk away, with wheelbarrows to get your luggage to the safari tents. Your hosts are John and Barbara Gorst – you’ll soon meet their dogs – whose family has farmed this land since World War II. They will be more than happy to answer your questions about their farm.

Local attractions

At Dophinholme Farm, the biggest problem is what to do first. The Forest of Bowland is within striking distance, for family days out at the Bowland Wild Boar Park (35 minutes’ drive) meeting the ostriches, meerkats and wild boar piglets, while older kids may be tempted by the daredevil rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach (45 minutes). If days at the seaside are what’s requested, Cockerham Sands (25 minutes) are often almost deserted, so yo may have them to yourselves. The southern limits of the Lake District National Park (45 minutes) await with all their cycling and hiking options on quiet lanes and woodland tracks. There’s more gorgeous countryside if you head east into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, stopping off to see gigantic stalactites in the subterranean caverns at Ingleborough Cave (55 minutes), and then wearing off some energy climbing up the scenic Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (45 minutes). If you’d rather stay closer to home base, go pony trekking (15 minutes) across the fells, take a picnic and hike up to Abbeystead Dam (10 minutes) or try your hand at coarse fishing for carp and pike (10 minutes).
