  • Friendly smallholding in peaceful hillside location with valley views
  • Minutes away from moorland walks on the Lancs/W Yorks border
  • Country pub a few minutes' walk away
Under new management from summer 2017, this is back to basics camping with spectacular views, over a valley in a peaceful area on the Bacup hillside, on a quiet private lane, and minutes away from scenic walks on the hilly moorland of the Lancashire/West Yorkshire border. The site has a three-acre camping field, a large car park and spring water (unsuitable for drinking but fine for animals and washing). Please note that there's only a compost toilet and a washing-up area: The White Stables doesn't have a shower (but does have washing facilities). Visitors are welcome to bring their own portable showers; please also bring your own drinking water. An Elsan point is on site. And as for tipples? A traditional country pub is only a few minutes' walk away. The site was taken over by new management in 2017, who are keeping the original approach of providing excellent customer service in a spectacularly set location.

Local attractions

The White Stables is on the hillside of Bacup, on the Lancashire/West Yorkshire border, and close to the spectacular (hilly, moorland and more) walks you'd expect in this part of the world. For a hearty six-mile hike, take the circular route out of Bacup towards Todmorden and Yorkshire, following the Rossendale Way for a part and passing a sculpture on the Irwell Sculpture Trail on its way back into town. Exploring by car, the site is ten minutes' drive from the market town of Todmorden, a place popular with outdoor sorts for its nearby mountain biking and fell running as well as for its walking: Todmorden is set along the Pennine Way, the Pennine Bridleway, the Mary Towneley Loop and the Calderdale Way. A small toy museum, theatre and tourist info centre are in town along with pubs, cafés, restaurants and independent shops. Within 20 minutes' drive is Hebden Bridge; if you want a city day out, Halifax is eight miles from there and Manchester 17 miles from Todmorden.
