  • Close to the beaches and dunes of Southport
  • Within easy reach of Liverpool and Blackpool; bus outside to Southport
  • Licensed shop, 80 acres to wander and indoor heated pool with spa
If you want to get to the beach from Riverside Holiday Park in Merseyside, just jump on the bus… Directly in front of the park is a bus stop with a half hourly service straight into Southport – step off bus, find sands and sand dunes, spread blanket on sand, sorted. (You might also like to hear about the very lengthy pier at Southport too…) And if you want to get to the museums and nightlife from Riverside Holiday Park, also jump on the bus: just across the road from the park is another bus stop with well-priced day tickets to the sights of Liverpool – step off bus, find museums, find nice old pub, sorted. For the days mooching about on site in between beach bathing and city sightseeing, Riverside has 80 acres to wander around, as well as a stream of facilities to investigate: a leisure centre with heated indoor pool, gym and spa open from March to November; fishing on site (bring your rod licence); and the Swan Bar and Restaurant from which to contentedly contemplate the countryside. There's also a large modern play area and outdoor splash zone for the kids (plus plenty of places for them to run around), a licensed shop, a launderette and a large area for exercising dogs. The toilet and shower blocks are centrally heated with free hot water, disabled facilities and baby changing.

Local attractions

The Victorian town of Southport has been one of the most popular seaside destinations in the UK since the times of Queen Victoria, when the population decided seaside holidays in the region were the way to go. Highlights include the smashing sand dunes, which roll out all the way between Birkdale and Woodvale to the south – part of the dunes are a National Nature Reserve and the keen-eyed should see sand lizards and Natterjack toads. Golfers go here too: Southport is the centre of England's 'Golf Coast' and home of Royal Birkdale Golf Club, once host to the Open Championship – several other courses are within 15 minutes' drive of town, so bring your clubs. The Ribble Estuary edges Southport to the north and is very much worth a wander for wildlife fans, as it has a big wildfowl population in winter and is also a National Nature Reserve. Also nearby for nature lovers, the WWT's site at Marton Mere is fab for families with its play area and child-friendly events like den building, pond dipping, arts and crafts and canoe safaris. And finally, take time in Liverpool, for attractions like the Museum of Liverpool and International Slavery Museum, the Beatles Museum, and the pubs and clubs around Concert Square and Mathew Street.

Hive camping pod (no pets)

Liked: Facilities were clean, well presented and the park overall was very well kept. Staff on site were really friendly and welcoming.

Disliked: The lack of facilities for teenagers, it would have been better if there had of been a pool table or table tennis just something to keep them occupied. The pool was great but requires an adult to stay and supervise, my 15 year old doesn’t want his Mum hanging around, life guards are essential as they have access to our local council pool without the need for an adult!

Hive camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: The hive was really clean and spacious, good shower and the site is a good location for the city centre. Really clean holiday site too.

Disliked: Wish there was washing up supplies, we had to buy washing up liquid and leave a pan to soak because there was no sponge. Felt bad not cleaning everything before we left. Shame the pub wasn't dog friendly, even though the site was :/
