  • Two miles from the beach at Bexhill-on-Sea
  • Family-friendly site with play areas and shop
  • Within easy reach of the historic sites of 1066 Country
Ditch the wheels and settle down for a Sussex seaside and heritage stay at award-winning and colourful Chestnut Meadow Camping and Caravan Park, on the outskirts of the seaside town of Bexhill-on-Sea. A bus stop is right in front of the site so you can get around without having to drive: the beach is a couple of miles away. Chestnut Meadow is in the historic part of green and pleasant England known as 1066 Country, so called after the 11th-century Battle of Hastings and the introduction of Norman rule into the land (if these facts make the kids yawn, they'll probably be gorily interested instead in how Harold died). Battle Abbey, Herstmonceux Castle and Bodiam Castle are nearby to explore the area's history, all reachable via local cycle routes. A family-friendly site, Chestnut Meadow has a playground, plenty of room to play, and a modern, heated shower block including a parent and baby washroom. There's also a small shop. A range of eco-friendly initiatives have been introduced on site, including recycling points, wildlife areas and the use of recycled materials where possible.

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: Great location. Quiet, well resourced site. Shower block was spotlessly clean. POD was warm, clean and cosy.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, a couple of hooks on the wall to hang things would have been great and a bedside table maybe for the morning cuppa ☕️

2 bedroom cabin (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked: Bed comfortable and bed linen very clean. Heating worked well. Peacefull sleep with sounds of Tawny Owls in the night.

Disliked: Not very clear instructions and the receptionist was very abrupt and rude on our arrival, as we were a bit confused as to where our cabin was. Original booking info said to bring towels and bedding, it had towels and bedding so we hadn't needed to bring ours. Toilet seat was not on straight, wife hurt herself in the night as it wasn't where she expected it to be. No welcome pack or food bundle, for the price I would expect something on the table. No gate, fenced off very well for the dogs but they just walk out the gap where a gate should be... bit pointless fencing it off. Stingy with the tea & coffee supplies with very basic sachets. Wi-fi not available for any use. No smart TV, just a very basic freeview set. Cutlery very minimal, no steak knives and prep knives very dull. On starting to cook at 6.30pm we discovered no cleaning supplies, dish cloth, tea towels, surface cleaner etc (we had to buy some the next day after first night with none). Hot-Tub not fenced off adequate, gaps in fence and not private from regular visits from cleaners in buildings opposite. And finally, worker turned up at 8.55am to very noisily clean the Hot-Tub! Very rude as we still had an hour left on our stay.

Electric optional grass and earth tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Toilets and showers were clean and tidy.

Disliked: We arrived and there was only 2 other tourists there. I opened the car door once I parked the caravan. I let my dog out and within 5 min I had a phone call saying my dog has to be on a lead. There was no one there and he was just running round the caravan. I then went to the Entry, Exit and there is a sign saying no passing for pedestrians. We wanted to get a bus into town and have a few drinks but we were not allowed to leave on foot. We had to use our car all the time. We felt like prisoners. The cost per night is more expensive than a Parkdean site. The grass was overgrown and looks untidy. You get the feeling your being watched all the time. Be careful when booking. They advertise the pitch as Electric optional grass pitch. So when we arrived we had to pay more for electric. I have never seen a pitch advertised like this before. It should say Electric or Non electric. Definitely not going again.

York 3 bedroom lodge (hot tub, no pets)

Liked: This place was absolutely beautiful, it has everything you need. We were worried as our lodge was right in the middle and we had 4 kids with us, so we didnt want to disturb anyone, however it didnt end up bothering us or people around at all, as it still felt very private. Very quiet and amazing lodge. Hot tub is excellent and very big. Drive to the shops etc was very easy. It is very warm, nice and welcoming place. It is bigger than it looked on the pictures. Many thanx!!! Will def return and will also look at the other locations of your lodges!!! A+++++

Disliked: It had all the cutlery and pots and pans, but since there was so many of us would have liked to have one bigger pot as we usually used 2 at the time. However again we made it work so didnt bother us much. Maybe little more toilet roll and more plates, we did buy some more toilet rolls next day. Shop was not open but as i said its quite easy to pop to the town, so they are just recommendations and didnt stop us from having fabulous time.

A bit further along the coast, the Blue Reef Aquarium, fishermen's museum and historic sites of Hastings can be reached within six miles: do take the cliff railway from its West Hill stop to delve into the adventure of local smuggling up at St Clement's Caves. To explore more about how the Normans took over all those years ago, trot along to the English Heritage 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield attraction five miles or so away, set at the abbey built on the battlefield in its bloody aftermath. More splendid Sussex castles are at Herstmonceux (seven miles) and Bodiam (12 miles), while for hair-raising adventures, you could take the kids to Drusillas Park or the Knockhatch Adventure Park, both 15 miles away.
