  • Authentic Sioux Indian tipis at a small rural East Sussex site
  • Walk to Herstmonceux Castle and a vineyard; coast 10 minutes' drive
  • Cosy tipis with campfire and barbecue area; access to ancient woodland
Sussex scenery meets Sioux styling at Big Sky Tipi Holidays, in a rural East Sussex location close to the tiny village of Wartling. This small site is just the place to escape from everyday life for a while, with days spent exploring the ancient woodland next to the site, heading down to the nearby coast or wandering over to Herstmonceux Castle, perhaps stopping at the local pub (with good food and excellent local ales, by the way) or taking a vineyard tour along the way. And the evenings? Well, they’re often spent stargazing around the campfire… The tipis here have been set up to make life nice and easy for guests, with all the essentials provided for your stay. Beds are provided with cosy duvets, pillows and bed linen, and there are plenty of blankets and faux-fur rugs to bring extra comfort and warmth to your stay. You’ll have your own campfire space, picnic table, gas hob and barbecue, along with a box of useful kitchen kit including pots, pans and cutlery. As is traditional, the tipis are oriented to face east to greet the morning sun, giving particularly great views to the early risers. Not to worry if you’d rather snuggle in your comfy bed a bit longer though – the giant outdoor bean bags will still be there later for you to chill out in the afternoon sun. Shared facilities include a toilet and shower block (with constant hot water), a fridge and electric points to charge your gadgets. Hailsham (15 minutes’ drive) is a good place to pick up food and drinks in the shops.

Local attractions

Your first outing from Big Sky should surely be to Herstmonceux Castle and the Observatory Science Centre, which are about five minutes’ walk away. Start with a wander around the castle gardens, then head into the observatory to see all the hands-on exhibits. You can also book in for special events here, including stargazing evenings with the huge telescope. After that, maybe it’s down to the coast, for a long walk at Pevensey Bay beach (10 minutes), a visit to the modernist De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea (15 minutes) or watersports and other amusements in Eastbourne (20 minutes). The Seven Sisters cliffs and Beachy Head (half an hour) are also close by for those who’d like a seaside walk. Guests with kids in tow may like to plan some time at the rides, play areas and animal attractions at Knockhatch Adventure Park (15 minutes) or meet animals from all around the world at Drusillas Park (25 minutes). On a more grownup break? The tours and tastings at Henners Vineyard (five minutes’ drive/an hour’s walk) may be more your style.
