  • Herstmonceux pub site alongside the 1066 Country Walk
  • Varied food menu made emphasising fresh local produce
  • Secluded setting; campfires allowed
The Bull’s Head… that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a… pub. But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which you might think is really rather an excellent combination… Facilities at the site include a modern toilet block and a water standpipe, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the pitching field. For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up dinner, plenty of pub grub options (using mostly local produce) can be had in the bar, although tables for meals are best off being booked in advance after confirming your stay and are otherwise subject to availability.

Liked: Everything!! A very quiet campsite with an exceptional pub. The food was amazing and the staff just so so friendly 🥰 easy check in, so reasonably priced, we will be back for sure 🤩

Disliked: That we couldn’t stay longer 🤣😆(obviously our own fault for not booking sooner as Friday was last night of the season)

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic camp site, pitch anywhere, fire pits provided. Clean toilets and showers with washing up sinks and water supply. Dogs welcomed. Camp site was quiet as only a small number of parties allowed. Level pitches, freshly mown grass.

Disliked: Showers were not hot. Fastest shower my daughter has ever had! Might try it at home.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A great location to use as a base, dog-friendly pub on-site offering extensive menu and a large beer garden with patio seating and outdoor heating. Functional plumbed facilities (toilets and showers) cleaned daily with hot water available. Communal washing-up area and access to drinking water readily available. Dog walking areas. Level pitch. Variety of shops within driving distance and option for take-away delivery as the location is well-known. Fire-pits available free-of-charge.

Disliked: A communal fridge freezer would be a nice-to-have. The option to buy wood for the firepit would have been appreciated. Recycling facilities would be a nice-to-have. Not an issue for us, but to note driving is essential to stay here.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Quiet location, the pub was lovely and breakfast shack was super handy and open until 4. Nice size fields for camping with campfires allowed, which is what we often look for. Toilets and showers were fine and fit for purpose. We would 100% stay again!

Disliked: No a dislike but the showers and toilets were very basic and there were only two. Could do with a couple more as there was often a queue

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The campsite is situated just behind the pub but far away that it’s super quiet, easily accessible and no problem finding it. Everyone working in the pub is helpful and friendly, a very nice atmosphere and pleasant to spend time in there. Campsite facilities are good, pitches are level, decent showers and toilets, general sinks for cleaning plates etc are useful. Such a quiet campsite and I felt very safe and secure at night during my time there.

Local attractions

With something called the 1066 Country Walk running past the site, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country… The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold (allegedly) got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves. The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rural Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre. As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can take the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip up (or down) Hastings’s cliff railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight… For less adrenaline-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches – the seaside is just a short drive away – or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls. Meanwhile, mini battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.
