  • Basic family-friendly working farm site in mid-Sussex
  • Half an hour's drive from Brighton; 15 minutes from Lewes
  • Resident alpacas, llamas, wallabies and camel
Fancy joining all the fun of the fur? Pack up your kit and head off to join the woolly residents at Alpaca Camp – no, not in some remote corner of the High Andes but a rather more convenient corner of mid-Sussex. This rural working farm between Uckfield and Lewes is within easy reach of both London and the south coast, with beach days in Brighton a half-hour drive away. Alpacas aren’t the only animals that call this place home: other residents you’re likely to meet include wallabies, a camel and quite a few wild birds flitting about too. If you’re bringing a camera to snap pics of animal antics, it’s worth turning your gaze towards the surrounds too, as the backdrop is one of scenic woodland and lakes. An ideal scene for a campfire cookout, you may surmise – a view that gets the thumbs-up from the folk on site, who’ve kitted out each pitch with its own firepit area and have firewood for sale. For tiptop grub to grill, there are a couple of farm shops within a few minutes’ drive; other supplies can be sourced at the supermarkets 15 minutes away (posh ones and cheapies to cater for every budget). Want someone else to do the work? Take a 10-minute trot to the local pub for drinks and dinner. In order to avoid any jealousy from the animals, human facilities here have been kept to the basics: toilets, a covered washing-up area and a simple hot water shower.

Local attractions

Alpaca Camp is niftily located between the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the South Downs National Park and Ashdown Forest, which means that there are hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and horse riding trails within easy reach. A riding stables is 10 minutes away for lessons or countryside hacks. Half an hour away is the famed Bluebell Railway heritage line – travel 11 miles from East Grinstead to Horsted Keynes, Kingscote and National Trust-owned Sheffield Park Gardens. Stations along the line have been restored to showcase different periods of the railway's life, taking you on a steam-powered journey back in time from the 1960s at East Grinstead to the 1920s at Sheffield Park. Like to shop? The market town of Lewes is 15 minutes away by car, and the fab independent shops of Brighton’s North Laine area are about half an hour away. Seaside paddles, watersports and an aquarium are on hand for folk whose interest in shopping is dwindling.
