  • Opposite seven miles of golden beach and grassy hillocks
  • Near to the SSSI Rye Harbour Nature Reserve
  • Four indoor pools, adventure playground, restaurant and show bar
There are a full seven miles of golden beach and grassy hillocks at Camber Sands in Rye – here, da dunes do run (and run). And with Camber Sands Holiday Park just steps away, there’s no reason Rye you wouldn’t pack your bucket and spade for a week or two in East Sussex… After a morning dip or proudly constructing the Best Sandcastle Ever on the beach, clamber back to Camber to dip your toes into one of four heated indoor pools (one each, should you be so inclined) or plunge into the Jacuzzi and sauna, available to the grownups for a small extra charge. Little people, meanwhile, can monkey around on the multisports field and adventure playground – rather thoughtfully, the latter is beside a decked area so you can supervise the offspring from over the top of your book. Kids also have many daytime activities available for tots to teens: Pipsqueak's Mousehouse is especially for the under-fives, and there’s loads more to pick from whatever your picky little one’s tastes, from ballet to archery to football on the sporty side, and trivia, dances and karaoke for those who prefer to take things a little easier. Crazy golf and go-karting are also available on site for an extra fee. For the evening shift, shift to the Showbar for music and entertainment from local and visiting acts, karaoke and themed nights; tums are covered from morning to night at the Boathouse restaurant and fish and chip bar with takeaway.

Local attractions

Slap sandy bang opposite the holiday park, Camber Sands is a family-friendly beach, crammed with wildlife on its dunes and larks soaring overhead, and even allowing beach barbecues (ask Rother District Council for permission in advance). Wildlife hunters and naturalists can see many more species at the nearby SSSI Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, which has free entry, a network of footpaths, bird hides and spottable species such as marsh frogs, terns of several types, brown hares and nocturnal bats, badgers and foxes. Both the village of Camber and the town of Rye have plenty of pickings for those staying nearby: start off at Camber for Camber Castle, built by – who would have guessed it around these parts – Henry No 8, and now managed by English Heritage. Access is by guided tour only and includes a tour around Rye Harbour nature reserve. Heading east towards Kent, explorers can easily reach the sands of Folkestone and Hythe, the towering fun of the Grade II listed Old Lighthouse at Dungeness, and the ferry port at Dover for a day trip to la belle France.
