  • Dog-friendly campsite in the grounds of a popular farm park
  • Between Billericay and Basildon; easily accessible by public transport
  • Restaurant, tea rooms, farm shop and kids' attractions
Spread across a spacious setting in the Essex countryside, Barleylands is a fab farm campsite with plenty of room for families to relax (along with their dogs if they're coming along for a country break). The flat grass fields at this working farm have basic facilities including hot showers and well-maintained toilet blocks and are a few hundred yards from a popular farm park where there are all sorts of animals, shops and food options to explore. Guests staying the night at Barleylands also qualify for a special stay-and-play discount, making it even easier to access its walk-through aviary, tractor rides, bird of prey displays and indoor and outdoor playgrounds. (The park is particularly recommended for kids between the ages of three and 10.) Also close by is the Barleylands’ craft village (open from Tuesday to Sunday), where there are over 30 different studios to explore. And, as it's surrounded by open countryside, Barleylands has great access to local footpaths and rights of way. Other outdoor leisure options in the area include a golf course and an equestrian centre, both of which are under a mile away. Barleylands is also easily accessible by public transport: regular local bus services stop opposite the park and can take you into either Billericay (journey time 15 minutes) or Basildon (20 minutes), where there are shops, cinemas, leisure centres and mainline railway stations. Please note that this is a working farm so there may be some noise from farm machinery at times.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved the spaciousness of the site and the hardstanding (gravel) areas for winter camping. Adequate toilet facilities with nice hot showers. Bit of a problem at first because Pitchup had not sent my booking details to the lovely lady at Barleylands so I had no information regarding the facilities codes until I phoned up. There is no actual registration, you just go to your designated pitch. The place is huge!! Good value with electric included. Well placed for touring Essex. The Dog and Shepherd pub nearby was really nice.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Size of pitches, huge space which was great for us. Local places were plentiful with lots to do! Quiet as well….

Disliked: Building site behind caravan through hedge. One delivery driver took a leak in the bushes which my 1 year old daughter could see… Toilets and showers not the best but do the job and bins were far away!

From the manager: Hi Paul, Thank you for your review and feedback and glad you enjoyed your stay overall. Sorry if the building site nearby disturbed your stay. This work will be completed in the near future and our new football golf will be opening next year. We hope to see you back at Barleylands again soon.

Local attractions

Bounce down to Basildon (10 minutes’ drive), where the town centre has cinemas, a shopping centre and plenty of restaurants and pubs where you can spend evenings away from base. For more urban explores, you’ll be about an hour by car or train from central London, making Barleylands a top option for weekends away from the capital or a mix of rural and city days out. Getting to the seaside is also easily arranged here, as Barleylands is 20 minutes from Thorney Bay beach, a family-friendly spot on Canvey Island with great views over the Thames Estuary. Southend (30 minutes) is also an option for traditional days by the beach, with amusements and a pier to sweeten the deal. For more things to do, take the family off to Adventure Island theme park (30 minutes), Diggerland Kent (40 minutes) or, for quieter times, try stately homes like Hylands House (25 minutes) and Boreham House (25 minutes), both of which have a range of gardens and pretty parklands to explore.
