  • Well-equipped caravan with private garden and barbecue
  • Constable Country: five minutes' drive to Dedham, 20 to Flatford Mill
  • Free-range eggs and local produce available; horses and dogs on site
If you’re chasing a thorough dose of rural peace and quiet, you’ll no doubt find it at Dedham Lodge near Colchester in Essex. The site has just one well-equipped caravan, and that’s tucked away in a paddock on an equestrian smallholding. Parking is located next to the paddock, which is accessed via stepping stones. The caravan is double-glazed for warmth and can sleep up to four people – but please note that thanks to its location, this family-run site is not wheelchair accessible or suitable for anyone under the age of five. Due to the presence of dogs and horses on the site, the owners are unable to accept any pets. When the weather is good you can while away time on the verandah watching horses being exercised in adjacent fields. The caravan is in its own garden area for privacy (with free use of the barbecue) and the site also has an unsecured outbuilding for bicycles storage if required. Local produce is available too – guests can help collect eggs from the laying hens for breakfast. Close by there are plenty of paths for walkers and cyclists, and Dedham Lodge is about half an hour’s drive from the beach at Clacton-on-Sea. It’s also near historic Dedham (five minutes’ drive) in Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its gorgeous Georgian architecture, equine paintings at the Munnings Art Museum and enticing traditional English pubs.

Local attractions

Flatford Mill (20 minutes' drive) should be a first stop when in this part of Essex... the 18th-century mill and its adjoining Miller's Cottage are both Grade I-listed and managed by the National Trust, which has added children's activity packs and regular events to the site, as well as a guided four-mile walk through the landscape that inspired Constable. There was quite a bit of it, as the scenic walks around Dedham and Dedham Vale will show. The Essex beach at Clacton-on-Sea (half an hour) welcomes you for seaside days out; to explore further afield, you can also stop off at Southend-on-Sea (an hour) to see the world's longest pleasure pier and have a ride on the Southend Cliff Railway. Nearby, Roman Colchester (20 minutes) is the oldest recorded town in Britain and should have at least a couple of days devoted to it: see the castle and Castle Museum with a mammoth exhibit on the Roman settlement, as well as the Natural History Museum and works at the Minories Gallery.
