Treat the apples of your eye to a stay at Orchards Holiday Park, a lovely Haven site set in a tranquil Essex backwater, but within easy reach of all the frisky fun of Clacton-on-Sea. The Orchards sits right on the water, close to the historic village of St Osyth. It’s a self-contained site, with its own nine-hole golf course, luxurious outdoor and indoor pools, a couple of comely coarse fishing lakes, and good food and entertainment facilities. With a 'pay as you go' Activity Pass, it’s easy as (apple) pie to get stuck into the plethora of sporting activities available on site: aqua jets, bowling, character Olympics, dance fitness sessions...we could probably carry on through the whole alphabet, there’s so much on offer. Some sessions are free; the others range from £4 to £6, depending on which type of pass you buy. Pipsqueaks will love the exciting fun in the free children’s clubs for all ages, plus the pedal boats, crazy golf, karts and amusements. The evening entertainment comes free of charge too, and the eclectic programme caters to all tastes, featuring magic shows, quizzes, live bands, comedy, cabaret and even wrestling.

Local attractions

Guests at the Orchards Holiday Park are spoiled for choice when it comes to seaside fun. If you’re looking for traditional piers packed with amusements, you can’t beat the buzz of Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze, and nearby Brightlingsea is famed for its watersports. It’s an easy ride into Colchester, which lays claim to the title of oldest recorded town in Britain, and is well worth a visit for its castle and museum, zoo and new contemporary art gallery. A 20-mile drive brings you to Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty perhaps better known as Constable Country, with gorgeous walking and cycle routes (bike hire is available). Suffolk, Norfolk and the Broads are all accessible day trips from the Orchards Holiday Park. When it comes to unspoiled English coastal resorts, Southwold is top of many people’s lists, with its historic pier, bathing hut-bedecked beaches and loads of lovely independent shops. Also in Suffolk, you can visit Jimmy’s Farm (of TV fame) to meet the rare breed pigs and take in the pretty gardens, nature trails, butterfly house and adventure playground. If you’ve always wanted to be the captain of your own ship, hire a boat for the day to navigate through the beautiful wetlands of the Broads. Those who prefer to stick to dry land could take the Bure Valley railway for a scenic 18-mile steam from Aylsham to the 'capital of the Norfolk Broads', Wroxham. Feeling lucky? Head to Great Yarmouth for a day at the races - you could splash your winnings at the Pleasure Beach, Sea Life Centre, or one of Great Yarmouth’s many other attractions.
