You'll have loads of leisurely options at this Greater London site: peaceful and modern Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park is less than an hour from the bright lights of central London (for city folk escaping and city connoisseurs visiting), and (the clue is in the name) lies among the splendid scenery, walks and bike rides of the Lee Valley. Need just a bit more? An 18-hole pay and play golf course is also on site for guests to use at members' prices. The site has a well-stocked shop, a spacious play area and a modern facilities block with toilets, free hot showers and a laundry corner with washing machines, tumble dryers and an ironing board. Walks and bike rides are all around, as well as the Lee Valley Athletics Centre for those who feel energetic and a nearby Odeon cinema complex for cosy evenings or damp afternoons.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Cocoon D camping pod (double, no pets)

Liked: I was looking for somewhere cheap and quiet to stay at the end of February within easy travelling distance of London but not in a hotel and not in central London. This was perfect for budget accommodation. Would have camped but luggage limit on Megabus too little for a tent. Also there did not seem to be much choice of cheap sites for back packer tourists near London. There is a bus stop outside for Edmonton (and there always seemed to be a bus there waiting; service is every 5 minutes). Ponders End train station a mile away giving a service every 30 minutes to the centre of London. See local life on the busses of get there quick on the train. Site was basic and clean and no complaints. Suspect it could get noisy in summer though as wooden camping pods and tents would be quite close to one another but not many there in February so ideal for me. Site is out of the way from the nearest towns so feels like its the countryside.

Disliked: I had no dislikes and to be honest I could not have found a better site. A map of the tube stations in reception to take away would have been very useful. A second hook in the showers for clothes would be useful too and perhaps a plastic chair to sit on in the toilet/shower room. The street lights from the bus stop to the camp sites were not working and its dark by 7pm in February but only a short distance so bring a small torch so as not to trip over bits of bushes on the pavement.

Local attractions

London, of course… get into the city in under an hour from the local station, Edmonton Green – trains run from here towards Liverpool Street station, gateway to the hundreds of things to see and do around the city. Those who've come to escape city throngs will happily find many activities available in the Lee Valley, Hertfordshire and Essex, from gentle walking and cycling trails to adrenaline-raising whitewater rafting or family paddling on the Olympic course at the Lee Valley White Water Centre (where the canoe slalom events were held during London 2012). Seasonal fishing is available in the area if you prefer a more placid pursuit, or you could take the crew along to Lee Valley Park Farms at Waltham Abbey, to meet meerkats, llamas, reindeer and other non-native (and native) critters, watch events like falconry displays and pig and lamb racing, or let the kids loose to career around one of the four adventure play areas. The 1,000 acres of River Lee Country Park should sort those who want to see critters in their natural habitat, as well as those who want to walk, cycle, or get out into the water in a canoe, rowing boat, electric boat or pedalo.
