  • Traditional site on a scenic working farm
  • On the South Downs Way close to the South Downs National Park
  • Close to local cafés, pubs and a farm shop
Old style stays in a wildlife haven and walkers' paradise are what's on excellent offer at Holden Farm Camping... a traditional site on a working farm in Hampshire run for generations by the Corbett family. This peaceful place is at the western side of the South Downs National Park, 160 square miles of landscape running through Hampshire and onto West and East Sussex. The farm is also on the South Downs National Trail, the 100-mile path from Winchester to Eastbourne, passing Arundel, Petersfield and the sands and cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters. Pitches are wherever you like on the huge wild camping field right in the middle of the farm, where you'll be able to blaze up a barbecue in the evening and listen to the owls at night. Guests are welcome to explore around them and meet/greet the sheep, cows and horses during the day: just please remember to stick to boundaries and close all gates as this is a working farm. For supplies, a general store, post office and two pubs (one with award-winning beer) is within walking distance at the village of Cheriton, and several local cafés, pubs and a farm shop are close by. Holden Farm opened in 2016 and has toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and a guest fridge.

Local attractions

Holden Farm Camping is on the South Downs Way, on its 100-mile route from Winchester to Eastbourne. Its local stretch runs from the farm to Winchester via Chilcomb and Cheesefoot Head, home of three bowl barrows and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (crop circles crop up occasionally at Cheesefoot Head too, so keep an eye out if you're passing). Seven miles from the farm is the market town of Alresford, reachable by foot if you fancy a hike. As well as shops and tearooms, it has the National Plant Collection of Snowdrops in its Brandy Mount House, and the handsome and half-timbered Fulling Mill, just out of town along the river path. Alresford is also the terminus for the 10-mile vintage railway Watercress Line, along to the valley town of Alton. Other fave local spots of the Holden Farm crew include Marwell Zoo, Avington Park, the National Trust stately home of Hinton Ampner and the Jane Austen Literary Walk, a four and a half mile route from Chawton where she lived for the eight years before her death. Also have a day in Hampshire capital Winchester, to see its cathedral, city museum and the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.
