  • Peaceful site with grassy pitches in the Hampshire village of Breamore
  • New Forest Water Park five minutes’ drive; Southampton 40 minutes
  • Firepits for hire, children’s playground and resident pigs
If you’re after a quiet but not remote spot with easy access to both village pubs and wooded walks, Dot’s Camping might just be the answer to your prayers. The site sits right on the River Avon, between the villages of Breamore (five minutes’ walk) and Woodgreen (10 minutes on foot), in Hampshire. This small, family-run site in the New Forest welcomes well-behaved dogs (though they must be kept on a lead), and your canine buddy will be able to stretch its legs on paths and bridleways that start right outside the entrance and extend into the surrounding countryside. Arniss Equestrian (10 minutes’ drive) arranges horse-riding excursions through the forest; if you’d rather stay still, waiting for fish to bite, you can get a day ticket for angling on the Avon. On site, well-spaced grassy pitches occupy a level field with wild areas to encourage wildlife. While the kids run around the site, exploring the playground or making friends with resident pigs Nutmeg and Ginger, you can get the barbecue going (baskets of logs, kindling wood and fire lighters can all be purchased on site). For breakfast, you can grab some pastries on site, alongside freshly ground coffee or organic tea. For other provisions, there’s a small on-site shop and a community-run store selling locally sourced food a 15-minute walk away. Alternatively, you can drive five minutes to Fordingbridge, where there’s a well-stocked supermarket. Please note that this is a quiet site, so no noise or music after dark or 10pm – indeed, no loud music at anytime.

Local attractions

Occupying an area of former gravel pits, Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) is crossed by paths and dotted with bird hides, so you can keep an eye on the antics of resident woodpeckers and herons. Swimming is not allowed, but you can have a go at wakeboarding on Ellingham Lake. If you’re travelling with younger children, they might like to visit Paultons Park, home of Peppa Pig World (half an hour), with gentle amusements inspired by the beloved cartoon character and her family. However, this is also a top spot for thrill rides, including the roller coasters in the ominously named Tornado Springs area. You can easily spend a few hours just sipping a drink or two by the marina in Southampton (40 minutes), but there’s also plenty to see here, starting with the SeaCity Museum, with its Titanic exhibition. If it’s the history of aviation that gets you going, you can head to the Solent Sky aircraft museum. From Southampton, you can also catch a ferry to the Isle of Wight.

Liked: Beautiful campsite, well laid out & flat, lovely location, clean hot showers & facilities. Dot was really friendly and helpful. Kids absolutely loved the play area. We will definitely be back next year and would highly recommend this site.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet campsite, great facilities and very clean. Great for families with young kids - there were some toys for them to play on and pigs to visit. Friendly owner had coffee and croissants available each morning including filling up my keep cup to take with me (can be paid for by cash or bank transfer). Pleasant surroundings, nothing much in the way of views but you’re on the doorstep of the new forest so it doesn’t matter.

Disliked: The ground under the topsoil was very stony so you’ll need a mallet and be prepared for some bent tent pegs - not a big problem but worth noting.
