  • Family-friendly site in the South Downs National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Winchester and the Watercress Line
  • Access to a private woodland with a bridleway to the South Downs Way
With countryside views and a good likelihood of spotting local wildlife and (if you’re lucky) birds of prey, Bottom Pond is an attractive little spot. The sunsets and stars are noteworthy too – after all, the family-friendly site is in the South Downs National Park, an area well-known for its wildlife and stunning scenery by day, and its dark skies by night. The views are indeed stunning from Bottom Pond, with green fields making up the scenery. The site has private access to a woodland area, which has a bridleway connected to the South Downs Way. This 100-mile walking trail will surely keep keen hikers occupied or set a challenge for those who want to walk a short way before returning for sunset on the pitches. On a starry night, it shouldn't be hard to find a spot to unwind, as Bottom Pond is in a peaceful spot surrounded by the countryside of the national park. However, that doesn’t mean that civilisation is far away – in fact, it's pretty close, as Winchester city centre is a 10-minute drive away and packed with historic attractions and a tempting range of restaurants for meals out. Alternatively, hit the shops to pick up bits for an alfresco meal back at your pitch – Bottom Pond permits barbecues so, if you time it right, you might get to sink your teeth into your first burger just as the sun is setting over the surrounding fields.

Local attractions

With Winchester (10 minutes’ drive) an easy drive away, it's easy to mix a bit of city time in with your country break. The 17th-century Winchester Cathedral (10 minutes) has a medieval library and a Norman crypt. You might also want to pay a visit to The Great Hall (15 minutes), which has a medieval round table rumoured to be connected to King Arthur. After visiting some historical sites, it might be time to get some hikes under your belt. There are over 100 steps leading to the top of St. Catherine's Hill (five minutes), which overlooks a gorgeous river valley. Winnall Moors Nature Reserve (10 minutes) in Winchester has flatter terrain. The longest walk, which is four and a half miles long, passes by water meadows and a river. If hiking sounds a little too intense for your lazy-day plans, head to Marwell Zoo (five minutes), a huge animal park that's home to meerkats, tigers, giraffes and other exotic beasts. A steam-powered ride on the Watercress Line (15 minutes) from Alresford makes a great day out too, with a a museum and heritage signal box to see before you board your train.
