  • Award-winning park in a nine-acre wildlife haven
  • Carefully managed to attract and enhance local wildlife
  • Barbecue areas, picnic tables and well-kept amenities
It’s all about the three Rs at award-winning Heathfield Farm Camping on the Isle of Wight… Or possibly four. Or five… These nine acres of countryside are decidedly relaxed and rural; the well-kept amenities have been recently refurbished; and, as it’s a wildlife haven, it’s a fairly reasonable bet you’ll see a resident red squirrel or two: Heathfield has been the recipient of many David Bellamy Gold Conservation Awards and carefully manages its habitat to attract local birds and beasties. Running around is a breeze too, with a wildflower meadow for canines to roll around in and a roomy playing field for kids to play ball games and generally let off steam – parents can ensure relaxation while this happens by prepping dinner/supping wine at the adjacent barbecue areas and picnic tables. Specially planted native trees and shrubs shelter most of the park’s roomy and marked pitches, all of which are level, easily accessible and with electric hook-up. Although Heathfield has a remote and rural feel, its West Wight location is only a mile from the shops and eating emporia of Freshwater village. Once you’re ready to venture out, the site's tourist information office has stacks of literature on what to do locally, and the information board on site has maps with colour coded walks into bridlepaths of the surrounding countryside. Even more handily, the island’s bus network has a stop outside the park – just the ticket for some restful roaming…

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Fabulous friendly greeting from Annie and Brian, on-site wardens. Clean well organised site with very generous pitch sizes. The cleanest most well kept showers/washrooms/laundry and dish wash facilities we’ve seen for a long while, AND… a great dog walk area! Loved it here so much we stayed another 4 nights instead of moving on somewhere else! Nothing to dislike, one thing we’d suggest is looking at installing a dog shower to wash off the salty water.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Site is beautifully kept, the wardens are absolutely lovely people who are so friendly and helpful, everything is impeccably clean and the park is an absolutely lovely touch.

Disliked: The showers really let the place down. They are push buttons that don’t get very hot (assuming as you can’t adjust it this is for safety). Allocation of our pitch also disappointed us as we had the only pitch which didn’t have a lot of grass and was incredibly muddy. Also having young children would of appreciated being closer to the park.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Wonderful campsite. Really spacious, very quiet at night and a great play park in the middle of the field so you could watch the children play from your tent. Facilities were always clean even when it rained and we didn’t have to cue for showers.

Disliked: The showers and toilet cubicles are a little bit small, but it wasn’t that big of an issue.

Local attractions

Everywhere on the Isle of Wight is easily reachable by bus or car in the short sort of time that makes the eyes of London commuters water, but if you want to start off on the west side there’s more than enough here to keep all ages happy. Freshwater’s large village (former home of Tennyson, poetry peeps) is edged by the chalk cliffs of Freshwater Bay and its beach, a mix of sand, pebbles and waves popular with watersporters. The 67 miles of spectacularly scenic trail that is the Isle of Wight Coastal Path include a patch through Freshwater: walk two miles from Heathfield to Yarmouth to access the 14-mile walk to Brighstone, and from there the eight miles to Niton. If 67 miles of coastline isn’t enough, the Isle of Wight has over 500 miles of public pathways through towns and villages, over downs and fields, up hills and through woodland: guided tours, including fossil walks, are available all over the island and a walking festival is run every spring and autumn.
