  • Quiet, out of the way site next to the beach
  • A haven for cyclists, birdwatchers and dog walkers
  • Beach, spectacular sunsets and horse riding on site
No need to be eagle-eyed looking out for a fab and beachy site in Kent: have a stay at the friendly little site of Hawk Place Camping , to be in a wildlife and birdwatching haven among scenery and sunsets so spectacular they were once painted by Turner. A Kent beach is a pebble's throw from here too, made up of a peacefully secluded stretch that can only be accessed by foot or bike. And if you fancy beach cantering? An equestrian centre is adjacent to the site, running private or group lessons for all ages and levels of experience. If you're a Londoner, Hawk Place Camping is a topping escape from the city at well under two hours' journey from Victoria to the local train station of Birchington-on-Sea, and although the site is within walking distance of the station, its setting between Minnis Bay and Reculver is set niftily out of the way for quiet stays. (If you're coming by car, Birchington is about an hour and a half from London and is easily accessible from the local Thanet towns.) It is a small-family run business with simple amenities including a toilet, shower, fresh water point and a waste water disposal. The owners are fairly relaxed and welcome dogs as long as guests respect other visitors and clean up after their pets. For supplies, Minnis Bay a 15-minute walk away has a couple of restaurants and cafés; Birchington a five-minute drive away has small local shops, supermarkets, pubs and cafés. Barbecues are allowed on site.

Local attractions

This is a cracking part of Kent coast for hikes, bike rides and serene strolls, particularly for those on a weekend city escape... A seawall runs from Minnis Bay a mile and a half from Hawk Place Camping along to Reculver three and a half miles away; as it's tarmaced, cycling, walking or pushing buggies or wheelchairs is a cinch along its length. The seaside resort of Birchington or Birchington-on-Sea is a five-minute drive away and set between Herne Bay and Margate. It has the eighteenth century manor house, grounds and museum of Quex Park lying to its south, home to the many stuffed African animals of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Three smaller beaches run alongside Birchington's main one of Minnis Bay. From Birchington, catch a train to other Kent seaside and countryside spots for day tripping, such as Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Chatham and Rochester.
