Liked: Nice, but muddy, walk along the river. Lady in reception was very helpful.

Disliked: Badly lit, uneven roads meant that a walk to the amenities block after dark was treacherous

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Large pitches that allowed a suitable distance between units. We have stayed a few times last year, and will return again during the summer months.

Disliked: The weather made a few problems seemed to pick the one that rained all Saturday night so, puddles and mud every where on Sunday morning when packing away. The toilets reflected this being some what muddy as you would expect, but the septic tank toilet emptying was very poor, blocked and smelly 3 pits emptying two blocked and the other not draining away. I left early Sunday before the office was open to inform them of the problem..

For future reference the mobile number printed on the front of your check-in cards is for any issues you have on site when the office is closed. We look forward to your next visit, hopefully the weather will be better for you to enjoy your stay.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Not much. Very basic for a touring site. The focus here seems to be wedding's, open air festivals and concerts etc.

Disliked: Very open and no privacy. Chemical waste could be better within cubicles or something similar. Hard standing Very small and roadway to pitches could be better.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: The adverse weather does not help with making the campsite appealing and wanting to enjoy the countryside and river walks. Weddings, festivals and concerts are not part of The Hop Farm campsite. The size of the electric pitches are as advertised, however many units are much bigger these days hence making the pitches appear smaller than what they are. Hopefully we can address the pot holes soon (they do help in keeping vehicles to the 5mph speed limit on site which not everyone adheres to).

From the manager: An email was sent to you the day you booked advising there were no toilets and showers open apart from the disabled toilet for your 1 night stay(perhaps you did not receive the email). On the Pitch-up website it is advised that the showers and toilets are closed between the 1st November and the 28th February under the "Please Note" section this is easily missed if not read. We do offer to change dates of stay as no refunds permitted within 28 days of arrival. We look forward to your next visit.

Local attractions

Once the kids let you off site, Kent (aka The Garden of England) has beaches, historic towns, forests and more castles, stately homes (and gardens) open to the public than anywhere else in the country. If this isn't enough, Paddock Wood railway station is five minutes’ drive from The Hop Farm for a train to London, less than an hour away. Dover is within 60 miles for a day trip to France. Kent has 350 miles of coastline, with Blue Flag beaches, watersports and those famous white cliffs at Dover. Eight of the 11 Blue Flaggers are in Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs; Whitstable and Herne Bay are also popular with oyster eaters, anglers and jetskiers. There are umpteen options for families in the area including play centres, farms, horse riding and days out. Howletts Wild Animal Park at Canterbury has the biggest group of looked-after gorillas in the world and experiences for visitors such as junior ranger days. Penshurst Place and Gardens has historical re-enactments, children’s trails, an adventure playground and special events during the school holidays. Both Leeds Castle at Maidstone and Hever Castle near Edenbridge are family-friendly and packed with activities and events. There’s a Go Ape! at Leeds Castle as well as two mazes, boat trips, falconry displays, underground grotto and the Knights' Realm Playground, a scale model of the castle (and a golf course and golf instruction for the grownups). Hever, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, has a yew maze and water maze, award-winning gardens and a topiary. Back with the big folk, the old market towns of Tonbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Wells are close by for shopping and sightseeing. Bluewater shopping centre is in Greenhithe (rival Lakewater is just over the Essex border at West Thurrock).
