  • Rural glamping two miles from village, and half a mile from local pub
  • A 15-minute drive to Eurostar at Ashford; 30 minutes to Camber Sands
  • Bed linen, bathrobes, fridge, private garden and barbecue all provided
Bring your walking boots, your keenest appetite and your dog to Woodchurch Safari Lodge in Kent: there are first-rate strolls and hikes all around this dog-friendly glampsite, including one to an award-wining pub (and its food menu) a half-mile amble away. A few minutes' saunter from the safari lodge will take you to a local path leading to around three hours' worth of walking in scenic Kent countryside, while the South Of England Rare Breeds Centre is a three-and-a-half-mile walk to the south. This is top terrain for cycling too, with with National Cycle Route 18 (a 61-mile route from Canterbury to Tunbridge Wells) passing by; secure bike storage is available for guests. The site has splendid access to and from as well, as it's a 15-minute drive to the Eurostar terminal at Ashford if you're heading to or from the continent. And if you seek the beach? It's about half an hour from here to splendid Camber Sands. The lodge is kitted out with beds, towels, bed linen and bathrobes, as well as solar-powered lighting, a fridge, charging facilities, and water and food bowls provided for your friend. A private garden, private car parking space and a barbecue are just outside.

Local attractions

Potter into Woodchurch, a mile or so away, for a wander around the Woodchurch Village Life Museum on Susan's Hill, then a clamber up to Woodchurch windmill for handsome views over the Walland marshes to the Channel. (Most happily too, the mill – when open in summer – is accessible via the footpath between the local pubs…) About a mile out of town is the South of England Rare Breeds Centre, where there are farm animals to see, a petting barn where your small sorts can snuggle smaller critters, and wildlife gardens, a butterfly tunnel and an aviary to roam around. Or stay close to home to see species like deer, squirrels, woodpeckers, herons and kestrels in the countryside around the site and along the peaceful cycle lanes nearby. More birdwatching and nature spotting is easily sorted at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (35 minutes' drive), voted Britain's favourite reserve in 2016 and home to all sorts of species around its coastal marsh, reedbeds, shingle and saltmarsh. The reserve has miles of paths to tramp, five hides to birdwatch from and events and guided walks all year round. Other top local options include a puff on the Kent & East Sussex Railway (15 minutes), a grownup look at Chapel Down winery (20 minutes), or taking your camera along to Bodiam Castle, set spectacularly in its own moat near Robertsbridge.
