  • Site set over 120 acres of West Sussex countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashdown Forest and East Grinstead
  • Easy access by public transport; lots of activities to book on site
Fab fields with roomy pitches and rural rambles await at Blackland Farm, a 120-acre park in the West Sussex countryside. They picked a good spot, did the Girlguiding charity, when they took on this place, as the site is a mere 10-minute motor from Ashdown Forest and within an easy hour of the coast. As well as its Guide guests, this site also welcomes families, couples and small groups looking for outdoor stays that abound in space. If you've got some energy to expend, take a peaceful stroll on the farm's woodland trails or amble down to the banks of the river Medway (15 minutes on foot). Alternatively, check out the range of adventure activities available to book on site – the main office will provide you with details of such things as zipwires, abseiling, climbing, kayaking and other ways to get your pulse going. Four-legged friends can join you on runarounds both on and off site and are welcome to overnight here. It's all pretty minimal on the facilities front here, but guests will have access to showers and toilets during their stay. Fancy doing a good turn for the planet? Consider leaving the car at home and catching the train to East Grinstead, where you can hail a local bus that'll take you right to the site entrance. The town also has shops and restaurants where you can sort provisions or dine out.

Local attractions

This part of West Sussex is fertile ground for history hunters, who can explore Hever Castle (30 minutes' drive) where Anne Boleyn (ill-fated wife number two) once lived. Also around is Chartwell (35 minutes), abode of cigar-chewing wartime leader Winston Churchill, and Standen (five minutes), a late Victorian country house with Arts and Crafts interiors. In terms of nearby nature spots, first up you've got Ashdown Forest (10 minutes), an ancient area of High Weald heathland and fabled home of Winnie-the-Pooh. Wakehurst (10 minutes), meanwhile, is a big botanical garden and seed conservation centre, and Borde Hill Garden (20 minutes) is more formal, with 200 landscaped acres to traipse through. Once you've been walked off your feet, a restorative ride on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes) may be in order – keep on taking in those country views, but let the train take the strain instead. Time to top up your vitamin D? In need of a dose of sea air? Blackland Farm is about an hour's drive from Eastbourne's cliffs, Seaford's shingle beach and Brighton's bohemian vibes.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Serene with SO many animals - herds of deer and rabbits so close to us in our field. The reservoir is beautiful.

Disliked: Just bring wellies as it's very muddy.
