  • Quiet site in the High Weald
  • Scenic views of the surrounding area
  • On 20 acres of grassland dotted with woodland copses
Is back-to-basics camping the sort of under-canvas hol that has you hooked? Then you'd probably like to get your claws into a stay at peaceful and popular Hook Farm near Haywards Heath in West Sussex. This is 'back-to-basics fun camping in its truest sense,' say the Hook Farm owners… and in a most enviable location too, as the farm is in a secluded and grippingly scenic setting in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The pitching area is on the south-facing valley of the farm covering over 20 acres of grassland with small woodland copses dotted about, carefully designed to have a minimal impact on the environment and landscape, with no permanent buildings and no main roads (cattle graze the site in the winter months too). Pitches are grass, some with smashing views over the valley and some surrounded by the small woodland copses dotted about the campsite. The site facilities include (very clean) toilets, hot showers and cold running water; as the owners say, those looking for state-of-the-art facilities might not find Hook Farm the site for them. But if you're looking for family-friendly countryside camping done old school style, with heaps of space, campfires allowed, a no-music policy and plenty of room for the kids to run safely around? Hook Farm should surely lure you in.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely loved this site. Lush rolling hills of soft grass. Very sloped in parts but plenty of flat spots to pitch and the slopes make some pitches seem very private. Huge area with gallons of space to choose where to pitch - surrounded by woodland. The owner couldn’t have been nicer - very welcoming and super attentive to every single camper’s needs. He directed me to a great walk through the woods the other side of the road - with streams, mossy boulders and gorgeous trees and he is very knowledgable about the area. A haven of wildlife around - red kites and pheasants galore (thousands of them in the woods!). Compost toilet and showers were fab. A truly lovely site which I thoroughly recommend!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We liked that it was spacious and very quiet. Also a couple of lovely pubs within walking distance. GREAT showers - best ones we’ve been to at a campsite!

Disliked: We weren’t so keen on the toilet facilities (compost & portaloos) by preference but they were well maintained and plenty of them dotted around.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely open site, lots of space. Compost toilets were cleaned regularly and was a really friendly site. Excellent value for money would definitely come back again

Disliked: You have to look for a level pitch as a lot of the site is on a bit of a slope. We had no problem finding one but might be more of a challenge at busier times. This is a very minor criticism though. Also be aware that it is on a flight path but this didn’t bother us.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very spacious, beautiful site. Friendly and helpful owners/staff at recption kiosk. Pub within one mile walk. Lovely weekend; wish we could have stayed longer.

Disliked: Not big problems but: Loos could do with a small solar-powered light just so you can find them in the dark without flashing your torch around. We picked the site because we have a dog that is reactive to other dogs. Dogs were supposed to be kept on leads, but they weren't. Fortunately the site was open and spacious enough that it didn't cause a problem and most of the dogs kept their distance. You have to hunt for a flat spot to pitch, but they are there if you look. You're not allowed to take your own wood to burn.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Space in campsite. Lots of well kept compost toilets/portaloos. Campfires. 15min walk to a couple of pubs. Nice location for walking in Ashdown Forest.

Disliked: Only down fall was the hills. Hard to find flat pitch if busier, but seemed like everyone found their comfy spot.

Liked: Peace and quiet. Close to a couple of lovely pubs with a variety of food including vegan options. Welcomed on arrival and you can but fire wood, kindling, fire lighters onsite. Plenty of toilets all dotted around, lots of lovely woodland and space. The most amazing camping shower facility we have used. We have visited a couple of times now and will be back again.

Local attractions

As might have been mentioned, Hook Farm is in an enviable location enveloped by the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; several walking trails and bridleways linking Weald villages and through splendid scenery lead directly from the site. Brighton is less than 20 miles away too for city days or nights out. Recommended options in the region include the colourful steam railway ride from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park on the Bluebell Railway, an 11-mile journey along the border between East and West Sussex, or wildlife watching at one or more of the Weald's couple of dozen nature and RSPB reserves. Ardingly Reservoir, close to Hook Farm, also has yachting, sailing, canoeing and hooking samples in pike, carp, tench, coarse and match fishing. At Ardingly village less than a mile from the farm, the National Trust's Wakehurst Gardens is a popular day out for the green-fingered as it's managed by London's Kew Gardens and is home to three national tree collections, England's biggest Christmas tree and the millennium seed bank, set up with the aim of preserving seeds from all native flora in the UK. (Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It was filmed here too if you feel like being dramatic among the trees.) Next door to Wakehurst Gardens, the South of England Showground should keep most tastes occupied with its events attended by tens of thousands throughout the year, including the South of England Show and dozens of public events. And if it's gardens you're after, plenty are within easy reach: try out Standen, Borde Hill and High Beeches just to start you off. Finally, fancy some forest to go with the woodland on the farm? Ashdown Forest is a six-mile trot from Hook Farm and has walking trails, pony trekking and other outdoor options.
