  • Three-acre grass field enclosed by high hedges
  • Back to basics stays between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton
  • A 20-minute stroll to dog-friendly Climping beach
Swathes of spectacular West Sussex scenery are what guests pitch up among at Alison’s Woodpecker Camping Field, set in loads of space between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Run by Alison, Woodpecker is a welcoming site beside the A259, well set for beach days on the south coast as well as for the local pub: the closest, in a traditional thatched inn, is five minutes’ walk away for pub food and real ales. Barbecues are allowed on pitches (no open fires, please). Woodpecker is a couple of minutes’ drive from the West Sussex village of Climping, a 20-minute stroll from the beach, and within easy reach of Arudel Castle and the southern edge of the South Downs National Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. The pitches are in fields enclosed by high hedges. Amenities include two family shower rooms with underfloor heating, two gas-powered showers, two flushing toilets and five chemical toilets. There's also a washing-up room with two sinks, a fridge, a freezer and plugs for your hairdryer or mobile phone charger.

Local attractions

The closest beach is Climping, a 20-minute walk or a few minutes’ drive from the site. It’s a top spot for families for its shallow swimming, and is also popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, with grass areas for setting up. Also within easy reach is Littlehampton (five minutes’ drive or 10 by the Coastliner bus), home to the family-friendly East beach and its free to use barbecues. Just beside the beach is Harbour Park, an amusement and funfair centre with free entry, rides and indoor play; for a quieter time, hire a bike for a ride along the promenade. If you’re around in summer, a Littlehampton must-do is the ferry ride over to West beach, a Local Nature Reserve. Next up, Bognor Regis (10 minutes’ drive or 25 by bus), for a day at the Marine Park Gardens and boating on the lake, riding the miniature railway, putting on the 18-hole green and having a picnic under the trees. (There are award-winning beaches here too – do make time for some sandy hours as well…). Inland, Arundel is 10 minutes’ drive from the site and Amberley 15.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I love nature so I loved the mushrooms coming up through the grass and the wood stack also that it's been left to grow 'wild' in certain areas.. I love the portaloo shower although too cold for an autumnal shower I think there fun! Alison, although i didnt get to meet her i did speak with her and texted! She was very polite chatty and very approachable i felt like iv known her for years...lol! Washing up room had extra bits (including the spiders 😆) I'm certainly interinged to see it in the height of summer ☀️

Disliked: I understand why there's 2 gates I'm sure there could be a better system... I'm sure if there was 2 adults or an older kid to hold/open the gates it wouldn't show as much also we left early and arrive back late every day!

South field electric grass pitch

Liked: Alison was very helpful and the site had all the amenities we needed. If you come in the evening do read your emails as there will be instructions on how to get in which are very useful. It had very good free wifi.

Disliked: Communal portaloos are not very appetizing but there are toilets in the shower rooms or you can hire a private toilet on some of the pitches.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Also on is very friendly and helpful. Other campers were also very friendly and helpful. Very close to Climping beach which is beautiful. Easy to get to other beaches attractions.

Disliked: Being right next to the A259. Constantly busy and very noisy throughout the night. Very difficult to exit campsite as your right on the A259. Difficult to walk anywhere without walking on a road. Walking to the beach you have to walk on a road. To get to the local pub you have to cross the A259 which is unsafe and not really possible without being in a vehicle, especially with young children. The play area is very small.

From the manager: Dear Guest, I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay due to the close proximity of the A259. I do make this clear in my descriptions and have photo's of the road and the entrance to the field from it. Road noise does not affect everyone, but I understand if you are affected by it then it is hard to switch off from it. I do advise that the South Field is quieter as any road noise is absorbed by the long run of holiday lets buildings in the middle of the Field, but on this occasion, August Bank Holiday, that Field was completely booked several weeks prior. There is a longer alternative walk to Climping Beach from the Camping Field by turning left, instead of right, heading on the public footpath 169 towards the School and down Bread Lane to the beach. It is shown on the Map that I provide all my guests with. The Oyster Catcher Vintage Inn Pub can be accessed safely by using the 2 lighted crossing reservations in the middle of the A259, directly outside the entrance to Maidenhead Aquatics. I appreciate that you were on your own with small children, so being in a vehicle would be safer for you all and the pub is easily accessible by vehicle. The right turn onto the A259 is tricky, especially on a bank holiday weekend with all the extra traffic. kind regards, Alison

South field electric grass pitch

Liked: Location of the campsite is great. Short walk to Climping and short drive to Littlehampton. Size of the pitch is good and we were lucky to have a great group of other campers there which made the experience social and fun.

Disliked: Toilets and showers and the main drawback. The portaloo's are smelly, especially in the hot weather, and the 4 showers were not great for family use. The gas heated showers regularly ran cold.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A decent camp ground, , good sized pitches, (6*6m) with enough facilities (loos etc) even on a busy bank holiday weekend. Walk to the beach via a 20 minute lane cross country with no cars.quite quiet despite the nearby A259. Alison the host was ever-present making sure everything was working and taken care of, greeting people and ensuring maintenance issues were dealt with.

Liked: Really good value for money for pitching tents. A great spot with a few beaches. Perfect for those with pooches. Really friendly staff. We stayed here one night but the facilities are some of the best I've seen. Would happily spend more nights if I had the time.
