  • Luxury pods in an orchard on a working farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Bude's surf beaches and South West Coast Path
  • Barbecues on outdoor terraces; hot tub with views; ensuite bathrooms
Up for luxury pods and hot tubs by the River Tamar? Take a trip to Well Farm Cottages, where Devon and Cornwall meet and much Westcountry adventuring awaits. These cosy curved pods with ensuite bathrooms are in an old orchard on a working farm, a short walk from the River Tamar and 10 minutes’ drive from shops and pubs in the villages of Whitstone and Holsworthy. Nor need you wander far to feast on said local produce: a gas barbecue and hob is handily sitting on your outdoor terrace for alfresco banqueting purposes and there’s a microwave and toaster inside. For hibernating types, a TV and DVD player add to the interior temptations, but if you’re into big skies and bubbles, you might prefer to be sipping something chilled as you soak under the stars in the hot tub. Some folk get restless, of course, and the smaller ones have a nest swing and a wooden fort playground to fling themselves about on, as well as a games room to get busy in if the weather's less fine.

Liked: The accommodation is very well equipped, clean and cosy. The owner / owners father made us feel very welcome and included the boys on the morning feed for the hens and pigs. It was a very pleasant, warm and friendly place! Rhubarb and Raspberry definitely stole the show though!

Disliked: not much to dislike

Local attractions

If you’re into surfing, or you’d like to give it a try, beetle over to Bude and Widemouth (20 minutes), where you can learn the arts of wave riding, hire equipment, or just watch the action while staying warm and dry... Bude's also a handy point to join the gigantic 630-mile South West Coast path: take it all the way round to Poole in Dorset if you’ve got the time and energy, or try a smaller section between Compass Point and Widemouth. Well set up for cyclists and walkers, the Tarka Trail has 30 miles of wooded valleys, salt marshes and hazel coppices filled with wildlife, and even short chunks between Okehampton and Bideford (both 40 minutes) reward you with a rich variety of views. Equally diverse, not to mention flat, the Camel Trail between Wadebridge and Padstow (50 minutes and an hour) takes bikers, hikers and horse riders along the route of a former railway line through some of Cornwall’s finest countryside. Family attractions are big in these parts: take your pick among the rollercoasters, death slides and raptor displays of The Milky Way, the furry animals and play barns of The Big Sheep, or the flumes, go-karts and meerkats at Crealy Adventure Park (40 minutes, 45 minutes and an hour away). Also an hour away, by no means restricted to small people or thrillseekers, are the indoor rainforest biospheres of the Eden Project.
