Well well well. The Middle Age pilgrims may be long gone, but they were smart sorts for picking the medieval well and holy waters now belonging to Juliot’s Well Holiday Park to rest their weary feet at in days of yore: this informal woodland park is in a rural retreat overlooking Lanteglos Valley and acres of Cornish countryside, with views that we can only call heavenly for well-earned relaxing... There are 33 acres of space here to roam around: cool and shady woods, hedgerows, a stream, secluded parkland and grassland with wildflowers and wildlife (don’t forget the picnic; there are quiet eating spots scattered all over). Can’t be faffed hardboiling eggs and cutting sarnies? Juliot’s Well is also a pub campsite and has the seventeenth century Coach House pub and restaurant on site for homemade food using local produce; there’s a dog-friendly area in the restaurant too and a sun patio for basking and eating outside. The roomy pitches at Juliot’s Well come with electric hookup, free parking for one car and access to the luxury timber-framed facility block with free showers; there’s a private bathroom accessible for a small charge (ask reception for a token to access). The park also has a heated outdoor pool open from mid-May to mid-September, a games room with games machines and pool table, launderette, playing field and play area, and a shop with essentials and free local papers. Entertainment is available during some weeks in peak season. Wifi is available to guests for a reasonable extra charge, with a free 20-minute sessions added to any purchase in the Coach House.

Local attractions

Port Isaac, Padstow, Wadebridge, Newquay and Boscastle are all near Juliot’s Well, and the closest beach is the long sandy stretch and popular surf of Trebarwith Strand four miles away, with rockpools and caves to clamber around. Also within reach is Tintagel, one of the most visited places in the UK and famed for its legends of King Arthur. The medieval Tintagel Castle, said to be the site of Arthur’s conception, should be your first stop; arthur that, have a gander at the seabirds around this part of coast or take a hike around the National Trust properties hereabout: the Tintagel Old Post Office and parts of the cliff around Penhallick Point, Glebe Cliff and Barras Nose. There are ancient barrows, forts and stone monuments all over Cornwall including a Bronze Age barrow, Iron Age hill fort and Bronze Age stone circle at Camelford, or head to Bodmin Moor ten miles away for hundreds of historical sites and the eighteenth century Jamaica Inn, used by Daphne du Maurier as the setting for her novel about Cornish smugglers. There’s a museum here too covering all things smuggling, and ghostbusters can sign up for one of the regular ghost hunts – overnight hunts are available for the hardy. For more active options, there are three golf courses around Camelford and a sports centre in the town with tennis courts and a heated outdoor pool, and, as it’s Cornwall, watersports and surf schools are close to hand. Or stay dry and take a bike along the Camel Trail, climb up tors on Bodmin Moor or have a canter over the moors or along the coast; there are three equestrian centres in and around Camelford to get horsey at. Feeling arty? Pack the paints and unpack the easel almost anywhere around the Cornwall coast, with inspiration and envy both on offer at the gallery of Tate St Ives about an hour away. Land’s End is an hour and a half away for more paintworthy scenery, and you can also reach Plymouth in around an hour for a Devon day trip.
