  • Laidback and family-run site on a 400-acre working organic farm
  • Just outside Fowey and a mile from Polkerris beach
  • Accommodation fields overlooking farmland and St Austell Bay
As you may have heard once or twice, there's some spectacular scenery around the coast of Cornwall. Drink it all in (with Cornish cider?) with a scenic stay at Penhale Caravan Park, overlooking farmland and St Austell Bay in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This laidback and eco-friendly site is on a 400-acre organic farm, with loads of space to spread out and a careful eye kept on visitor numbers to avoid overcrowding. (Have a gander at the pics to see the roomy pitches, sea views and spectacular sunsets all up for grabs for Penhale guests.) Barbecues are allowed, so it's pretty much mandatory to brown up some bangers as the sun sets and settle contentedly down to watch the lights of Mevagissey twinkling in the distance across St Austell bay. There's plenty of room for the kids to run about while you do so, as well as a games room for them to burn off some energy indoors. Penhale has a small shop selling essentials; full supplies can be sourced a mile and a half down the road in Fowey. Also on site is a heated amenities block with free hot showers, washbasins, toilets, hairdryers and electric shaving points.

Local attractions

As with much of Cornwall, Penhale is in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so look out for all sorts of species such as seabirds and seals, dolphins and basking sharks, and – with luck – a whale or two around Fowey's estuary. Wildlife safari trips can be booked nearby; ask for info at the Fowey tourist office. The nearest beach, Polkerris, is a 20-minute walk away, in a sheltered harbour overlooking St Austell bay. From Polkerris, it's a couple of miles to Fowey and about six to St Austell: don your walking boots and a hardy expression to take the South West Coast Path to either town, along the 10 and a half-mile stretch from Mevagissey to Par, via an Iron Age castle at Black Head, the 'Cornish Alps' of the china clay works and the comely little harbour of Charleston. If you need a pitstop in Charleston (you should, it's mighty pretty), drop into the Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre, for exhibitions about ships, shipwrecks and the history of the village. Then potter along to the harbour, to see a fab collection of old ships so famed and pretty they're used in film projects all over the world.
