  • Small, friendly and family-run site on a five-acre smallholding
  • Within 10 minutes' drive of Perranporth's surfing beaches
  • Half an hour's drive from Bodmin Moor and Paradise Park zoo
Fond of fishing? Sometimes like a drop of cider? You’ll love it at Lakewell Touring and Camping Site, where there’s a fishing lake in the grounds for guests’ exclusive use and a cider farm with tours and tastings five minutes’ drive down the road. If apple-based tipples and angling aren't top of your agenda, it's handy that this peaceful family-run site on a smallholding is conveniently close to surf beaches and cycle trails, coastal paths and moorland meanderings. It’s also less than five minutes’ drive from the village of Goonhavern, where there’s a pub and a shop, and, for those touring the area by public transport, bus links to popular seaside and surfing spots like Perranporth and Newquay. Whether you’ve spent your days riding the waters, contemplating them, or doing something completely different, you’ll probably return ravenous, and if the pub and its menu seem too far to stray, you can pick up supplies in Perranporth or Newquay and have a barbecue back at base. Save a sausage for the dog, of course… canine pals are welcome on site too. With the waves of Perranporth a 10-minute drive away, the site’s popular with surfers, and proprietors Peter and Jane have installed an outdoor tap for the sluicing off of wetsuits and other gear.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great welcome on arrival, really friendly owner. Well maintained pitches, facilities second to none. Toilet and shower block, pristine with plenty of hot water.

Disliked: The shower timer could do with being a little longer (very minor point).

Liked: Everything! Second time visiting and not the last next year we will be staying longer. Owners are the nicest people and make your feel so welcomed. The site is most probably the cleanest well kept site we have ever stayed on. The lake is a brilliant added extra to do some fishing when back on the campsite my 10 year old son loves it and is never bored. Hardly any noise from the A road just a hum of traffic that goes silent during the night no cars revving or beeping horns just passing traffic, of a morning it didn’t wake us up the birds did and we were the closest to the road so no issue if it’s a problem camping is most probably not for you. Lovely pub down the road nice food and atmosphere always feel welcome and dog friendly. Also great location to local beaches. If you like a peaceful, restful camping trip then you are looking at the perfect site! No Wi-Fi or phone signal for us but to be honest that was brilliant as you get to really enjoy your time away and not on your phone all day you get to take it all in and really enjoy your stay :) See you next year x

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We were greeted with enthusiasm and a friendly face at reception. Everything was explained really well. It was a special trip as my Grandmother used to own the establishment in the early 80s and I’d not ever visited since I was around 6 months old, so it was sentimental to take my 6 year old daughter there. The grounds are lovely and quiet, and it’s perfect for families. We will be making this stay a new tradition.

Disliked: No phone signal, or wifi in the camp areas. But not a total disaster to be off grid.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: What a great campsite, so many positives it’s hard to know where to start. Lots of space on the campsite, lots of green space in front of pitch with room for children to play. Only 30 or so pitches so very quiet campsite. Toilets and shower block immaculately clean and very modern fit out. Didn’t use laundry but sufficient for small numbers. The owners are absolutely lovely, nothing was too much trouble, made sure we settled in and always a friendly hello. Wetsuit cleaning shower and hanging area. Really hard to think of anything we didn’t have.

Disliked: This is minor, to get to the bus stop does involve a walk along a busy road (will probably ease when A30 roundabout improvements complete), so if walking with very small children may be a bit of an issue. We managed ok (children 10 and 8)

Local attractions

The beaches of Perranporth and Newquay (15 minutes) are a haven for surfers of all levels, and have schools offering tuition in wave riding... but there are plenty of other ways to travel about this part of Cornwall too. There’s horse trekking and beach galloping on the menu in Perranporth and bikes to hire in Cambrose (15 minutes) for a coast-to-coast trail along the old miners’ route to Cornwall’s southern shores. Perranporth’s also the place to pick up the South West Coast Path for sea views and wildlife walks at height, and it’s half an hour to Bodmin if you want to see some of the county’s inland landscapes. On the edge of the ancient heaths, the Golitha Falls Nature Reserve has bluebell woods lining a long gorge that gives way eventually to a series of crashing cascades. It’s a similar distance to Bolventor for jaunts around the real Jamaica Inn and the resting place, so ‘tis said, of Excalibur at Dozmary Pool. For close-up encounters with wildlife, pack your earplugs and stop off at the Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes), or hang with the red pandas, Asian short-clawed otters and an ark-load of avian life at Paradise Park (30 minutes). Soothe any ruffled feathers with a flit round Healy’s Cornish Cyder Farm, five minutes away, and once refreshed, take a quick chuff on the restored steam trains of the Lappa Valley Railway (15 minutes).
