  • Simple site in south Cornwall, five minutes' drive from a surf beach
  • A 20-minute drive from St Ives, Scilly ferries and St Michael's Mount
  • A five-minute drive from a pub and a farm shop
Surf beaches? Coast walks? Simple outdoor down time with peace and seclusion thrown in? Ride up to The Old Stables Campsite, a back to basics and back to nature spot in Cornwall, five minutes’ drive from the top surf beach of Gwithian Towans. There's plenty of wide open space here, so guests can laze about and take in the views. Amenities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a tap for water. However simple you like your stays to be, it’s handy to know that the site's a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the village of Connor Downs where there’s a pub with food. A farm shop and restaurant selling and serving up fresh local produce is two minutes’ drive away; for more serious stocking up, it’s a 20-minute drive to Penzance. Hit the beach five minutes’ drive away for surfing, bike hire and to join up with the mighty 630-mile South West Coast Path.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Easy to get to. Owners were really friendly! Showers and toilets were clean and always smelt fresh! Showers were hot. There’s also an area where you are able to wash your dishes. We had a lovely night camping 🙂 Cannot comment on child friendliness or Wi-Fi as we don’t have children and my partner has unlimited data

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Friendly and welcoming site owners. Booking was easy. Great showers and toilets.

Disliked: 20 second shower buttons which means you are constantly having to push to re start the showers. Supposedly an ‘ eco feature, which is fine, but 30-40 seconds would be so much better and surely wouldn’t damage its eco-ness!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and thought our facilities were great with exception to the push button. Although we very much promote being eco friendly and are in favour of less water being used, we have no control over how long the shower runs once the button is pushed, as the modern non conclusive taps are non adjustable and set in the factory at the time of installation. We are glad however that this has not put you off staying with us and you will recommend us to your friends and visit again in the future. Jayne and Mike 😃

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Really friendly welcome and farewell. Spacious pitch on a very well managed site. Super affordable. The showers and toilets are purpose built, immaculate and the best I've seen on this sort of site. Hot water at the sheltered washup which is unusual in my experience. I am definitely tempted by the beautiful wooden camping pods and shepherds huts on site too.

Disliked: My partner didn't like that the showers are closed 10pm - 6am, but he is fast asleep then 🙄 Honestly, there's no satisfying some people!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and found the team friendly, the site well managed and the facilities immaculate. We are sorry that your partner did not like the showers closing at 10.00pm. One of the reasons for doing this, is so that they can be disinfected and left over night, ready for a thorough cleaning in the morning. Another reason being, is that the shut off time compliments quiet time on site and encourages our guests to settle for the night. We hope that you will visit us again in the future and maybe stay in one of our pods. Jayne and Mike 😄

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice flat grass pitches. Clean toilets & showers. Good price. Efficient reception. Mini market just down the road

Disliked: Bit of a trek uphill from the coast path with no footpath & sometimes no verges. Exposed site on top of the hill.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for complimenting us on our clean facilities, good pricing, efficient reception and flat pitches. I have to agree that it is a trek up from the beach 😁, which would be so much easier if there was a footpath. There is a way back that keeps you off the road, but you have to be prepared to Zig zag a windy lane which adds 10 minutes to your walking time. Despite this and being exposed to the elements at time, it’s great that you would still return and recommend us to your friends. Jayne and Mike

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This was our second stay at The Old Stables - last time was May 2022. We loved it so much we came back! The toilets/ showers seem to have been upgraded and we’re super! We have stayed at a few campsites this summer and these facilities were by far the cleanest. Staff were extremely helpful and approachable. We will be back next year!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad that out of all the sites you have stayed this year you found that our facilities were by far the cleanest. The amazing comments we have received this year about the cleanliness of the facilities, makes all of the endless hours cleaning worthwhile. It’s great that you found us all helpful and approachable and that you will return to us in the future. Jayne and Mike

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Jane and Mike were so helpful and we loved how friendly everyone was. Showers and toilets clean and modern. Loved the van providing breakfasts. Walked to the pub - about 10/15 mins on the short cut which is more like a restaurant. Good location for beaches and tourist attractions

Disliked: Don’t know about Wi-Fi so can’t comment on that

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to write a review. It’s great that you found everyone friendly and helpful, the toilets clean and modern and you loved the breakfast van. We don’t provide wi fi , as the 4/5 G signal is good and Wi-Fi has not been a priority for us. We hope you will visit us again in the future.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Really level ground which is important especially in a camper as it’s your whole set up. Facilities were immaculate and very thought through. Little touches like a breakfast van and pizza evenings. We’ve both agreed that we’d definitely do longer at this site in future visits!

Disliked: Can’t fault it

Local attractions

The beaches along this stretch of Cornwall’s coast are top spots for watersports, nature walks and the simple pleasures of splashing in the sea. Walk the coast path up to the more secluded sands at Godrevy (a 10-minute drive), then onwards to spot seals from Godrevy Point. For days away from the waves, there’s go-karting to be had at Hayle as well as animal encounters and indoor play at the Paradise Park and Jungle Barn. For something more artistic, make for St Ives (20 minutes) for a wander round the Tate Gallery and the studio of sculptor Barbara Hepworth or go underground on a walk through Cornwall’s industrial history at the Geevor Tin Mine (half an hour). Penzance is your place for boat trips: fishing, seal spotting and dolphin watching as well as the daily ferries to the Scilly Isles (you can take the helicopter for a quicker trip). Day trips to this subtropical island group are very doable, with many visitors hiring bikes to explore the beaches or find spots to go snorkelling with the friendly grey seals. For a closer island experience, take a 20-minute drive to Marazion then walk the cobbled causeway to St Michael’s Mount. It might involve a boat ride at certain times of day, so check ahead, but however you arrive you’ll find a treat on this island with its medieval chapel and castle, winding paths and nature-filled gardens.
