  • In the grounds of a Cornish manor house a mile from the beach
  • A few minutes' drive from St Ives
  • Indoor pool, sauna, crazy golf, licensed clubhouse, shop and TV room
This, you'll sigh wistfully, is how the other half live: cute cottages in the grounds of an old Cornish manor a few minutes’ drive from swanky St Ives and the Tate Gallery – and just over a mile from the sands at Hayle Towans: spacious, golden and away from thronging Cornish crowds. To the manor borne... Most happily, bulging budgets aren’t needed for a stay at Tolroy Manor Holiday Park near Hayle: there’s all manor of free fun on site like the heated indoor pool and sauna, tennis and squash, crazy golf, evening entertainment and the kids’ Foxy club from 6pm for mini lords and ladies. The licensed clubhouse has free wifi and also does bar food and takeaway at reasonable prices. Other peerless facilities include a games room with pool table and the latest video games, free snooker table for the over-18s, shop, launderette and TV room. There are coach stations and train stations within a mile or two of Tolroy Manor, but as with most places in Cornwall, you’ll get more out of your holiday if you bring the car.

Local attractions

Coves, beaches, seaside towns, museums, mines and more await you within easy driving distance of Tolroy Manor. There are several beaches besides Hayle Towans within a couple of miles: Black Cliff and Mexico Towan half a mile away, and Porthkidney Sands and Godrevy a mile and a half to two miles away for more secluded spots (try mussel picking at the far end of Porthkidney Sands for particularly tasty specimens). Award-winning St Ives is a few minutes’ drive away: after feeling arty at the Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, there are five more beaches to roll around on, the harbour for eating pasties at (mind the gulls) and boats to take out to Seal Island. From St Ives you can reach Penzance, the most westerly town in Cornwall, home of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzanze and departure point for St Mary’s on the Isles of Scilly; and from there it’s ten miles to Land’s End to get your town name on the famous signpost, stare at the scenery then tearfully declare you’re not going back home. (There’s also risk of this happening at the gorgeous Lizard Point, outmost tip of the Lizard Peninsula, and St Michael’s Mount, the National Trust-managed rocky island with medieval castle and church – both nearby.) Portreath and St Agnes are just along the coast for scrambles around the tin mines at St Agnes Head or walks to Porthtowan (four miles) and Godrevy (eight miles) in either direction from Portreath on the South West Coast Path. Slightly further along the coast is Newquay for the surf, or head inland for bargain hunting at the knickknack shops of Redruth and Truro. A bit further but still within an hour’s drive is St Austell on the south coast: here you’ll find the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Crealy Great Adventure Park: three days’ worth of activities sorted right away then…
