  • Peaceful caravan park in a wildlife and stargazing haven
  • Under 20 minutes' drive from both Cornish coasts, with great beaches
  • Self-contained caravans with outside seating areas
Head down to Poldown Caravan Park, in a peaceful and sunny little hollow, sheltered from wind and three miles from the nearest beach. St Ives, Falmouth, Penzance, Mullion, The Lizard, Hayle, Gwithian and Godrevy are among the places under a 20-minute drive from this peaceful spot; on site, this is top stargazing land for spying night skies on clear eves. Poldown has five kid-friendly pubs serving meals within a three-mile radius; a couple of supermarkets are within two miles in Helston, and restaurants, takeaways and a top fishmonger in the fishing town of Porthleven a couple of miles away. Closer to home, a farm shop is within half a mile. On site, the self-contained holiday homes each have their own outside seating area. The park itself has ample green spaces, excellent for enjoying the Cornish air. Each caravan also has a parking space next to it.

Local attractions

Cast off from Porthleven harbour, hire a dinghy or kayak on site, take your feet around the Cornish coastal walks or make it your mission to visit as many beaches as humanly possible…and that's before even mentioning golf courses, horse riding trails, adventure parks or tin mines... But to the beach(es) first: as well as Praa Sands and Porthleven, there are several sandy spots along this stretch of coast and coves close by at Kynance, Mullion, Poldhu and Pollurian for watersports, fishing or just basking sunbaked and contented on the sand. Take the A3083 towards the Lizard to reach Kennack Sands, a family-friendly beach in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or go the other way towards Penzance for Longrock Beach and safe swimming. Towards Falmouth, diving tuition, shore dives and beach dives are available from Porthkerris Beach to swim among the local basking sharks or the area’s shipwrecks. Marazion is a good family beach that doesn’t get too crowded; while you’re there, take a trip to the island of St Michael’s Mount for castle tours and summit climbing. It’s managed these days by the National Trust, which also keeps an eye on the house and medieval garden at Godolphin a mile or two from Poldown and on the working harbour of Mullion Cove. Once the kids have tired themselves and you out at Flambards, the Eden Project is about 30 miles from Helston, or they can tire you out again at Newquay Zoo, Hayle’s Paradise Park and the Crealy Great Adventure Park; add some history into the mix by bringing them underground to Poldark Mine to see how the tin miners used to put in their days. As it’s Cornwall, you’ll find most other places within easy reach: Falmouth and Penzance are close by, but heading to the north coast, St Ives, Portreath and Newquay are all easily doable for a day trip. Or stick closer to home and sample the Cornish cream teas and seafood in and around the villages of the south coast: if you’re going to Cadgwith to pick up lobster and shark, you can also squawk sea shanties with the Cadgwith Singers in the local inn on Friday nights.

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site was perfect for us. We wanted a quiet and spacious location for families, somewhere the children one could socialise with children their own age, without being crammed next to others, and having other peoples children run around our caravan or being too noisy. This campsite delivered. It was a beautiful location, very green and spacious. It was quiet but located close enough to the local community to be able to access everything you need. The owners were so friendly but not overbearing at all. The other guests on the site were friendly but mainly kept to themselves and the children played. The patches were well spaced, private, clean and well maintained and were more than large enough to accommodate a caravan and awning, with some even having their own picnic tables.

Disliked: I really can't think of anything I didn't like. If I have to pick something the only thing I could suggest it to have a hose on the fresh water taps to prevent the water from spraying out of the tap everywhere. The site was so good I almost don't want to encourage others from going as it may mean the next time we want to book its full! :)
