  • Peaceful, dog-friendly single Cornwall campervan pitch in Balwest
  • Praa Sands 10 minutes’ drive; St. Michael's Mount 15 minutes
  • Ponies and chickens on site, plus barbecue and picnic table
A 10-minute drive from the coast and beaches like Praa Sands and Porthleven, Smithy Field is a quiet site in the peaceful village of Balwest, with expansive views over Cornwall's West Penwith peninsula. And peace is pretty much guaranteed for guests here too – this location has just a single campervan hardstanding pitch, next to a quiet garden area with a picnic table. There are ponies, geese, ducks and chickens on site, but well-behaved dogs are welcomed (as long as they remain on leads), and they’ll gladly follow you for walkies along nearby paths and bridleways. After working up a bit of a sweat, you can take refuge in one of the many local pubs – there are several within a three-mile radius – for a pint and some home-cooked food. Many guests, though, will likely make a beeline for the splendid Cornish coastline, whether for hikes along the South West Coast Path (10 minutes’ drive) or for watersports. Praa Sands and Perranuthnoe (10 minutes) are popular with surfers, while Marazion beach (15 minutes) is a magnet for families. Not only does it have calm waters that are safe for swimming, it also has a well-equipped children’s playground. The cherry on the cake? Front-row views of St. Michael’s Mount, which can be accessed via a granite causeway at low tide (or by boat at any other time). Back on site, a barbecue is provided, and you can buy logs from the owners, along with freshly laid eggs in season. A composting toilet is available.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: The peace. I just wanted a couple of nights of peace and that's exactly what I got. Weather was terrible, but didn't matter, I could just drink tea and listen to the rain. Compost loo nice and dry. Could have sat on the bench and enjoyed the view if it stopped raining for 5 minutes.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely spot with grassed picnic area with firepit . Great for a night or 2 stop in self contained campervan. Water and composting loo. Lovely views and great walk up to monument. Warm welcome.Turning to pitch no obvious at first but hosts very helpful

Disliked: Entrance and lane narrow but not really a problem in 5.5m campervan.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Being the only unit there. Wonderful for our nervous dog and disabled adult son. Loved the private garden at the back of the plot, the picnic table ,the fire pit and the private composting facility. The farm animals were lovely to see. The owners were friendly.

Disliked: The pouring rain. The access to the plot was tricky with the camper van but would get easier with practice. None of which were the fault of the owners.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: This is a great location for a camper van. Secluded private garden with fire pit/picnic table/bbq/toilet/water. There was also a rubbish bin, with a new bin bag along with twigs in the fire pit. We are new to camping and this gave us the opportunity to work through procedures in private. Great location for cycling or walking. The hosts were great and made us feel most welcome. It was clear that they had gone to great efforts to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Peaceful private little site. Penny and Andy were lovely and Penny even gave us a tour of her grounds and all the animals! She also showed us a good walk to the top of the local hill. The site itself is your own little spot with tap and toilet and lots of other nice bits like your own bbq. Defo will return here!

Non-electric grass and gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Smithy Field is such a wonderful spot - a single pitch for a campervan with gravel standing for the van plus it’s own little garden with a picnic bench, fire pit, bbq, cold water tap & a composting toilet. The views are incredible - from coast to coast - and the many walks off in every direction straight from the van made it so easy with our nervous dog. The star gazing is really special! Andy & Penny are the real stars though - friendly, thoughtful and accommodating - we will be back!

Local attractions

The National Trust property Godolphin House (five minutes’ drive) is a former mining estate renowned for its 16th-century gardens, with orchards, beehives and the fragrant walled King’s Garden. This is also a good spot to take in far-reaching views of the Cornish coast, all the way to St. Ives. If you’re in the mood for thrills, head to Flambards Theme Park (15 minutes), where you can have a go on the Skyraker, which twists as it drops from a great height, or on more family-friendly attractions like the Western Mine Train. There are also indoor reconstructions of period settings, like a Victorian village or a British street during the Blitz. Clinging to a granite cliffside stretching into Porthcurno Bay, the Minack Theatre (40 minutes) is well worth a visit for the setting alone, which makes for a pretty dramatic backdrop to any theatrical production. During your visit (which needs to be booked in advance), you’ll be able to walk on stage and check out the garden area. If you’re lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of seals or dolphins.
