  • Peaceful farm between Looe and Liskeard
  • Campfires allowed: buy organic eggs or rare breed meat to sizzle up
  • A mile from the nearest shop and a local pub
Those among you who like luxury berths, teeny tiny farm sites, cracking customer service and picking up fresh organic eggs/rare breed meat to sizzle gently over the campfire should flock to Penbugle Farm (‘shepherd’s hill’ in Cornish) for some properly peaceful days. Even by Cornish standards, the location of Penbugle Farm is one to toot about: between the old market town of Liskeard and the fishing port of Looe; 25 minutes from the Tamar Bridge and the Devon/Cornwall border, and halfway between the highlights of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. It’s run by the five members of the hospitable Ridout family, who'll be happy to share their tips and info on things to do. On the farm, you won’t even hear a car engine roaring past your pitch – cars are only allowed in the designated parking area outside the paddock to keep things as safe and sedate as possible on site. (Fret not if you’re thinking this means you have to stagger to your berth with armfuls of kit: wheelbarrows and trolleys are provided to cart your stuff/overexcited small children/the dog along to where you’re staying.) There are picnic tables to park at for your campfire-cooked meals: you can pick up fresh farm and local produce on site when available, as well as wood and fuel for a campfire or barbie. And don’t forget your torch and wellies: this is serious stargazing country because of the low light pollution… cosmic.

Camping pod

Liked: EVERYTHING! If you are after a comfortable, quiet place to stay with the family then this is the perfect place. The pod was more than big enough for the four of us and the dog. we took a tent in case the pod was a little cramped but didnt need it. Inside the pod there was a fridge, toaster, kettle, an airer, broom, dustpan and brush, a heater, a microwave, please note there were no utensils or pots and pans however I believe you can hire these if needed. Each pod has its own private bathroom which was fantastic, extreamly clean and quite new, with a large good shower and washing area for pots and pans etc. We loved having a fire every night and looking at the stars. It was quite spectacular as there was no light polution (apart from the fire), also not a sound could be heard. Good locaton, we visited Looe, Polperro, Powey and the Cider shop with is a 2 minute drive. We would definatly recommend this place to anyone and really hope to visit again next year. Thank you Lizzie for having us.

Disliked: Nothng at all.

Local attractions

The closest village to the farm is Duloe, set among deep valleys between the east and west sections of the River Looe. Popular activities with guests to these parts include seeing the Duloe stone circle, the smallest in Cornwall and dating back to the Bronze Age, and watersports or fishing in the River Looe. Salmon, brown trout and sea trout can all be landed from both stretches of the Looe, with shoals more fish and fishing in Looe itself. If you don’t want to take one of the numerous sea fishing trips to land your own catch, wait for the boats to come back from a day’s haul and pick up some from them. From Duloe, it’s four miles north to ancient Liskeard, one of the few towns in Cornwall still to have a weekly livestock market and now with a lively arts scene alongside its independent shops and restaurants. Coastwards, St Austell and Polperro are both close to hand too: make for Polperro for the Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing to learn about Cornwall’s nefarious past, and St Austell for the China Clay Country Park and the start of the Clay Trail. To the east, it’s about 16 miles from Penbugle Farm to Plymouth.
