  • Craft and countryside site three miles from Newquay
  • Classes, workshops and farm shop with fresh baked goodies daily
  • Communal feast nights serving stonebaked pizza, curry and hog roast
Cor. Newquay site Coastal Valley Camping and Crafts is a place that's packed with clever little touches: for example, might you fancy sampling the baked goodies that are available to order from the farm shop on a daily basis? The crafty programme at Coastal Valley includes a splendid range of activities for avid artistes and outdoors types, covering bushcraft skills, silk painting and woodworking among others – all available for a reasonable extra charge. Although it’s only three miles from busy Newquay, Coastal Valley is in such a cannily rural location that you won’t see a single road or house from the site, just the site stream, cracking Cornish countryside all around and a blaze of colour in spring and summer from the silver aspen trees, gorse, daffodils, agapanthus and buddleia. (If you visit in autumn, there are berry many opportunities for foraging blackberries, rosehips and sloes, to which you might say ‘bramble brandy and sloe gin’.) Three beaches, including the two and a half mile stretch of spectacular Watergate Bay, are within walking distance via more cracking countryside. Other crafty additions on site include communal feast nights starring stonebaked pizza, curry and hog roast, a nature trail for wily wildlife watchers to spot rabbits, occasional deer and the resident stoat, and picnic tables and benches peppered all around for alfresco eats. Pitches and facilities are set up equally shrewdly: guests in the well-maintained grass ‘touring ring’ have access to award-winning bathroom facilities with free hot showers; plus a well-equipped kitchen with gas hobs, grills, microwave, two fridges and a freezer. All in all, really rather resourceful…

Local attractions

Although it’s a tad tricky to pick a ‘best north Cornwall beach’, the sands and waves of Watergate Bay are a first stop for many visitors to this part of the coast, whether they want to bake gently on the sand or hit the surf with kit from one of the surf shops. Whipisderry beach, on the north coast road, is another early port of call for visitors, and was named one of the best 20 beaches in Europe by beachcombers at the Sunday Times. At low tide, dig into the rockpools, or take a torch and explore the caves including the Cathedral Cavern and its tunnels, the Boulder Cavern and the Banqueting Hall. (Whipisderry isn’t lifeguarded, so check the tide times carefully.) Once out of the water, there’s lots to do on land too: acclaimed Newquay Zoo and the Blue Aquarium Reef, Newquay Golf Club and its spectacular views over the Atlantic, sea fishing and boat hire all along the coast, and family days out at Buccaneer Bay (aaaarrr) or Dairyland Farm World. The famed Eden Project is about 15 miles away.
