  • Off-grid luxury glamping site overlooking the spectacular Porth Valley
  • Extra-large yurts three miles from Newquay
  • Café, firepits, sunbathing terrace and luxury shower block
Might you rather like your own extra-roomy luxury yurt with a private outdoor kitchen, terrace and firepit... as well as the use of several swanky wetrooms, a cosy barn café and a sunbathing terrace, madam or sir? You've got all this and more at Real Glamping at the Fir Hill: its setting in the handsome hamlet of Colan is a mere three miles from Newquay and close to spectacular beaches, highly scenic cliffs and splendid hikes along Cornwall's gorgeous north coast. This eco-friendly estate is self-sustaining and totally off-grid, with its own natural springwater supply and power source generated using only biomass and solar energy. Ten solar thermal panels, a turbo log boiler and two thermal stores provide all the underfloor heating and hot water to the site's amenities; 40 solar photovoltaic panels produce power; and a battery storage room stores any energy that's been generated during the day ready to keep the site cosy and well lit in the evening. Food for alfresco feasts can be ordered online and delivered direct from the local supermarket, and various takeaway and delivery services operate locally too for whenever you fancy a night off grill duty. If you're coming with a group of 10 or more and would rather focus on being the host(ess) with the most(ess), you can relieve yourself of barbecue duties and leave the job with the Fir Hill folk for a fixed fee by arrangement. Communal facilities include a café and a cosy quiet room in the modern converted barn, as well as an upper terrace that's most suitable for sunbathing sessions. Among the site's many well-kept amenities are a luxury shower block with eight showers and toilets.

Liked: The yurt was beautiful, and the whole site was lovely. Our spot was extremely private, the firepit and kitchen facilities outside were lovely. Charlie made us feel so welcome before we'd even arrived and all communication was extremely helpful and friendly - to be honest, as a host he probably makes the holiday. It was such a nice treat to have our own water supply and cool box/packs provided, spare gas etc if needed. There was really nothing we needed to ask for but we got the feeling that nothing would have been too much trouble. Can't recommend highly enough for a peaceful getaway with a little bit of luxury.

Disliked: Not at all a dislike - but as we were glamping (for the first time) and usually camp in our own tent and never get electric hook up, it would have been nice just for a change to have a plug in the yurt - but understand the want to be off-grid still.

Liked: The yurts are so much better than the bell tents that are the usual glamping offering. They are so much more spacious, stay cool (or warm) because they are insulated and keep most of the insects out. They are also constructed on decking which keeps them a lot cleaner inside especially in wet weather (it was wet during our stay but we were still nice and dry all the time). The estate is a great place with the yurts a good distance apart offering lots of privacy. The children loved exploring and with no roads nearby it os safe for them to do so. Great clean warm toilet/bathroom facilities as well - we had a dedicated bathroom for our Yurt so didnt have to share! Host was very welcoming and went the extra mile for his guests. highly recommended.

Liked: Ok. So, the Real Glamping lives up to its name. I have been on many camping trips, but this one will hold special memories. Our 8-year-old boys and our 14-year-old niece loved every minute. Amazing views, Quality yurts, comfortable beds, we got our private bathroom in the main house. It is a perfect location with a 15-minute drive from the beaches. We had amazing nights on our private section of the grounds with a massive log firepit, which was Ideal for barbeques and Marshmallows. It also kept us warm whilst we gazed up at the stars. However, this site's heart and soul is a guy we can now call a friend. Charlie. Charlie took care of us before we started our journey to Cornwall and greeted us with open arms. He provided us with many options from his wealth of knowledge of Cornwall and ensured we were very comfortable and safe. I highly recommend.

Disliked: I wish we had stayed longer.

Liked: Yurt is nice, the setting is great and friendly atmosphere. Outside area is excellent when dry and nothing better than a fire pit

Disliked: Although there is electricity it’s in the main house so no charging at the yurt. Power is eco friendly no dryers for those with long hair

Liked: Charlie was the most lovely host! Everything is there for you and they can not do enough to help you / accommodate for you. I couldn't reccomend enough! We stayed in a lovely Yhurt, had a wonderful fire pit to cook on and a camping stove. Toilet and shower facilities are really nice and clean. Everything is kept to a high standard.

Liked: We’ve literally had the best 4 nights at fir hill , we’ve had a holiday like I used to have as a child , put the phones and tablets away . We’ve played hide and seek in the orchards , cooked jacket potatoes in the fire pit . Can’t recommend it enough , Charlie is the friendliest host and works so hard to make your holiday perfect, If your thinking of taking your 4 legged friend then do it you won’t find a more dog friendly site

Disliked: That I couldn’t bring the mattress home

Yurt (three person)

Liked: Dreamy few days rest after walking the SWCP. Couldn't believe my luck when I got to spend some time on this beautiful open site with fabulous swimming in nearby freshwater reservoir. Very spacious hand-painted yurts with linen sheets and comfortable beds. A bespoke outside kitchen, including cooler with fresh ice and new logs for the fire pit everyday. The yurts are all in their own private gardens. Very efficient shower block. Plenty of seating areas for guests. Charlie -- very good artist -- all his paintings are everywhere -- very chatty and friendly. Will be back, for sure.

Disliked: nothing

Yurt (pet friendly, six person)

Liked: The yurts are excellent and the host is very friendly and accommodating. There is no need to take any cooking equipment or plates and cutlery as all is provided. The site is well maintained and the shower block is quite presentable. A dog friendly site which is exactly what we were looking for so that none of the family were left behind. All in all an excellent week in the country just outside Newquay.

Disliked: The only minor concerns were the proximity of the airport as the noise from the helicopters disturbed the otherwise peaceful and tranquil setting. And the cost was quite high at £200 per night for a 3 bed yurt.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Adam I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and thank you for joining us. Ref the price ….I believe you stayed in a 3 person “couples plus yurt” and you paid £140 per night not £200 ! If I am right I think you have done us an injustice ! If so, any chance of changing your review ? Kind regards Charlie
