St Ives is known as Cornwall’s art corner, and we bet even the most matchstick men creators among you will be breaking out the watercolours once you see the views at Ayr Holiday Park, the only holiday park in St Ives itself and with stunning scenery of the town, local beaches and over to 30 miles of Cornish coastline. Less than half a mile’s walk – suitable even for junior artistes – takes you to the beaches, harbour and attractions of award-winning St Ives: the Tate St Ives gallery, four beaches and fourteenth-century inn among very much more. If you have very very junior artistes (ie, finger-painting toddlers) or are feeling dizzy at climbing the hill to get back to camp, just jump on the bus from town that passes the site entrance. Back on site, swing by the on-site food shop for all the picnic necessities and set up your easel/camera almost anywhere for views you could sell on postcards, including over Portmeor Beach, the Tate Gallery, St Ives Bay and across it to lonely but gorgeous Godrevy Lighthouse. (It’s a very hard call, but the spot overlooking Porthmeor and St Ives Bay is the one we’d pick to consume a sunset, a cider and a Cornish pasty.) Ayr Holiday Park accepts bookings from family groups and couples only.

Route directions

By car, follow the A30 past Hayle, then take the St Ives exit. 300 yards after leaving the A30 for St Ives, turn left at the second mini roundabout following the directions to St Ives for 'Heavy vehicles', 'Day visitors' and Tate Gallery. After a couple of miles you will join the B3311. After driving through Halsetown you will join the B3306 about 1 mile from St Ives (an octagonal building will be on your left). Turn right for St. Ives. At the next mini roundabout turn left as directed by the brown caravan park sign to Ayr and Porthmeor beach. Following this road, you will reach the park entrance after 600 yards on a sharp 'S' bend at Ayr Terrace. By train, change for St Erth for St Ives; the park is a short taxi or bus ride from the station.

Local attractions

If it’s not in St Ives, it’ll be nearby: walk into town and catch a bus to many of Cornwall’s top attractions such as the Eden Project, Mousehole village with its safe sheltered beach, and glorious Marazion and National Trust-managed island St Michael’s Mount. Naturally artists will fancy a trip to Tate St Ives first: it has 70,000 works of art by 3000 artists and currently holds Britain’s national collection of art. Newlyn, another arty area, set up the Newlyn School artists’ colony in the nineteenth century and now has several art galleries to amble around at. To see the best of the Newlyn artists’ work, potter along to Penlee House in nearby Penzance, which holds the biggest collection. Pirately Penzance, less than seven miles from the holiday park and Cornwall’s most westerly town, is just another of dozens of nearby spots worth spending a day at whatever your tastes; if historical, go underground at Poldark tin mine, the only complete underground mine in Cornwall; if watery, take a dip at the Jubilee Pool, one of the UK’s oldest lido; and if sandy, the aforementioned Mousehole and Marazion to bask at. Sticking strictly close to home will fill all your holiday days more than nicely, whether you prefer sunbathing on the sand or plunging into/onto the water. Porthmeor and Porthminster, both within half a mile of Ayr Holiday Park, are top for watersports: standard surfing and kayaking are the order of the day here, but you can also try some stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing, diving and water skiing. Other beaches abounding in this area include Penwith and Porthkidney Sands, nicely solitary towards its dune end; the surf of Praa Sands and the three-mile length of sand at Hayle; throw your bucket and spade into the car boot and see where you end up. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Flambards theme park and Newquay Zoo are just a few other Cornish highlights reachable by car before the kids say they’re bored; one of the best things about Cornwall, we think…
