  • Peaceful valley site 15 minutes' walk from St Just
  • Views down the valley to the Atlantic Ocean
  • Self-catering kitchen, showers and drying room
You may, just possibly, have heard that Cornwall's Land's End is a bit special. The moat westerly point of mainland Cornwall and England as well as home to spectacular views of the Cornish coast and Atlantic Ocean... if by any odd reason you've never been here, land in this corner of Cornwall immediately. Those Atlantic views are all around from YHA Land's End, where guests can pitch their tents in the roomy and handsome garden in front of the hostel for views down the Cot valley to the water. It's a five-minute ramble from the garden to the South West Coast Path too (more splendid views, natch), and 15 minutes' walk from the small seaside town of St Just. Active backpackers, cyclists and families all flock to this part of west Cornwall for peaceful hols within easy reach of outdoor days: the site's valley setting is just north of Sennen Cove and its long sandy beach and famed surfing waves. More surfing is nearby at Whitesands Bay, or you could set out for days out horse riding, golfing, fishing or – cue kid excitement overload alert – Flambards Theme Park about 40 minutes' drive away. It's tent camping only here (do see pics to see views), with barbecues allowed. Guests are most welcome to use all the hostel facilities including the self-catering kitchen, the showers, and the drying room.

Route directions

By car or bike: IMPORTANT: The only road access to YHA Land's End is via Kelynack on the B3306. Turn off the B3306 at Kelynack and follow the road through the farmyard and past the sign 'Unsuitable for motors': although narrow, the road is tarmac and in good condition all the way to the hostel entrance. Follow this road without making any further turns until you reach the gate with 'Letcha Vean, YHA and Hostelling International signs. By foot: From St Just, walk past the library away from the town centre along Market Street and turn left following Bosorne Terrace past a chapel and recreation ground. Turn right down a narrow lane, passing cottages and an old well. Where the lane ends turn right down the footpath, following the signs for YHA. If heading north on the coast path follow signs to YHA from south side of Porth Nanven or via Letcha Farm from Gribba Point. If heading south on the coast path follow the road upwards in the Cot valley (opposite direction to coast path which follows the same road down the Cot valley) and turn right onto the small track at Rosewell Cottage. Cross the stream and then follow YHA signs.

Local attractions

Saunter the 15 minutes from the hostel to St Just, the nearest town to Land’s End for a scenic day by the sea. Your camera should surely accompany you on any sightseeing trip here, for St Just is one of only two towns included in Cornwall's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty... and the scenery around there is tiptop. As it is around most parts of the Cornish coast: hike on the South West Coast Path from St Just to gawp more, or drive the 15 minutes from Land's End to Penzance for viewsome scenes from its seafront and promenade (make sure you have a dip in the open-air seawater Jubilee Bathing Pool while there. Alternatively, meander for about an hour by foot (perhaps not with your board) to reach Sennen Cove and its world-famed surf. Delving into local history (there's quite a bit), Geevor Tin Mine 15 minutes' drive away is part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site: visitors can take trips down the mine and hear how the clever Cornish took their mining skills all around the world.
