Big Dunk likes to play games. Specifically, he loves a game of footgolf on a sunny day. Yes that’s right, footgolf. For the uninitiated, it’s (perhaps unsurprisingly) a mash-up of football and golf, with players aiming to get the ball in the hole with as few kicks as possible. You’ll pick it up as you go along, but one of the main things to know is that it’s fairly hilarious entertainment… Something else that Big Dunk likes is looking at the sea. So much so that he decided to combine two of his favourite things and open his own footgolf course a mile from the Cornish coast, up on a slight hill for great sea views. And so that you too can share in the big guy's happy place, he’s now inviting you to come and stay at Big Dunk's Sea View Campsite. It is (by Big Dunk’s own admission) a fairly basic site, but the two well-kept grass fields (one dog-free) have plenty of space. There are composting toilets, as well as a kitchen sink unit with mains water and a mains tap. The site doesn't have showers, but a leisure centre is four miles away and the sea within 15 minutes' walk. You’re welcome to light up a barbie on your pitch, or you can pick up hot food to take away. (The famed pulled pork rolls, made with free-range meat from Dunk’s own farm and topped with cheese and crispy onions, are really rather spectacular). The site also sells drinks and Cornish ice cream. If all of this sounds appealing, make haste – Big Dunk’s Sea View Campsite is a pop-up that’s only around for a few weeks in the summer.

Route directions

The site is easy to find: on the B3263 between Tintagel and Camelford, you will see signs for Foot Golf. The No 95 bus stop is a few yards from the site entrance. If travelling by train it's possible from Bodmin Parkway station to get the 95 via bus 55 to Camelford or the 11A to Wadebridge.

Footgolf isn’t the only game that Big Dunk enjoys – he’s also partial to paintball, laser tag and combat archery, so he’s set these at Big Dunk's Paintball, five miles away. Active types can also have a surf lesson from the experts at Trebarwith Sands Surf School, a mile from the site. A good place for a walk is St Nectan’s Glen, a 45-minute walk or 10-minute drive away. Here you can walk through woods and along the banks of the River Trevillet to find waterfalls, a hermitage and maybe even some of the fairies that are rumoured to live around here… Further otherwordly exhibits are on display at the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, 15 minutes’ drive away. If your interests lie more with World War II, plot a course instead for the Davidstow Airfield & Cornwall At War Museum to see memorabilia including uniforms, planes, posters and recreations of life in the officers’ mess and the sleeping quarters.
