  • Peaceful family-friendly farm site overlooking the Taw valley
  • Great pub serving food 10 minutes’ walk to Bishop’s Tawton village
  • Hiking and Biking haven: Tarka Trail, National Cycle Route 3 nearby
In need of country strolls, sandy days and ocean swims? You’ll be pleased as punch with Whitemoor Camping – a small family-friendly farm site a two-minute drive from the village of Bishop's Tawton. You'll be able to spot sheep grazing peacefully on the surrounding pastures while you kick back in peaceful Taw valley countryside, smugly secure in the knowledge that you're only 25 minutes from the north Devon coast. The site is within 10 minutes' drive of Barnstaple (one of the UK’s oldest towns, fact fans), and within 35 minutes' drive of Saunton Sands, Croyde Bay and Putsborough beach. The foothills of Exmoor National Park are also within easy day trip distance (25 minutes' drive, at Dulverton) – best pack your surfboard and your hiking boots for this hol… After all that adventuring, you'll be after a nice hot shower so hot foot it back to base, then settle in next to the campfire (nab some wood on site) or set the barbecue blazing for well-deserved eats. Struggling to get set up? There's always a member of the family on hand at the farm's Devon longhouse, so wander over if you need a helping hand. Bishops Tawton has a thriving pub where you can pull up a chair for a meal – and the best bit is it's only 10 minutes' stroll from the farm.

Electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked: Permitted to have a camp fire.

Disliked: Quite expensive and not easy to find along a VERY narrow road. Late check in (3 pm), and the owner wanted an additional £18 for us to arrive 2 hours earlier. Very small and cramped electric pitches and far too close to other guests tents. We couldn't have our car or trailer on our pitch and couldn't even set up our tent porch. Toilets & showers are clean but rudimentary and quite far from pitches. The owners dogs are running free around the site and one of them left an unpleasant deposit at the side of our tent. Very muddy on walk to showers & toilets.

From the manager: I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. We are in the countryside in North Devon which does tend to have some smaller roads, if you are not familiar with the area. Our website and our 3rd Party booking sites advertise an early check in fee of £6 per person for those who want to check in early and use the facilities as we incur a cost in providing these services prior to check-in time. All electric pitches are advertised as (a minimum of) 7.5m x 7.5m. The majority are 8.5m x 8.0m which is the size of Pitch 6 which you occupied. During the weekend of your stay all other campers parked their vehicles on the pitch. You were offered to do the same with the alternative option to park it on the hard-standing behind your tent, which you chose. You raised the issue of the dog deposit at the time and you received an apology from us and it was cleared immediately. The route from the electric pitches to the loos & showers is 90% concrete or hardcore I'm not sure how you managed to get muddy.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The views were so beautiful. We were lucky that we were the only ones when we arrived and so had a choice of pitches. Perfect for a chilled few days away. Facilities clean, lots of space for young children to play in that felt extremely safe for them to do so, friendly owner

Electric grass and sand touring pitch

Liked: The scenery was beautiful, it was quiet and the facilities were clean.

Disliked: Nothing. The campsite is up a steep hill. Its a 15 min walk down to the lovely village pub and uphill back which may not be for everybody but thats what gives the campsite its tranquil setting and views which we really enjoyed.

Local attractions

Hikers will have a happy time down in Devon along the mighty Tarka Trail, inspired by Henry Williamson’s novel Tarka the Otter and winding through a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve (start the trail, or a shorter cycling trail, 10 minutes' drive away in Barnstaple). Saunton Sands (25 minutes) is a fab spot for longboard surfing and for taking the dogs for a stroll, while Woolacombe beach (35 minutes) is considered one of the UK’s best, with splendid clear waters to splash about in and a long stretch of sand lined with National Trust-managed hills. Stretch your legs at Exmoor National Park (25 minutes), tramping about in view of scenic moorland, woodland, coast and rivers; if that isn’t enough to break a sweat, access the South West Coast Path an hour and 20 minutes away – the longest national trail in the UK and a top spot for birdwatching. Sporty types are well placed at Whitemoor Camping – if you fancy getting physical, Barnstaple Rugby Football Club is your best bet, or you can challenge your mates to a few sets at Tarka Tennis Centre (10 minutes), set sail on a yacht at Instow (15 minutes), score a hole-in-one at Saunton Golf Club (25 minutes), or learn to surf with top teachers at Croyde Bay (30 minutes).
