  • Rural site on a smallholding with livestock in Devon's Ruby Country
  • A 20-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park and 25 to Bude beach
  • Direct access to the Ruby Way bridleway for walks and cycle rides
If indecision over whether to go for a coastal or countryside trip often plagues you when pondering where to stay, one solution is to dawdle over to Down Yonder Campsite, and settle in among the Dexter cows and sheep on this scenic smallholding 25 minutes’ drive from the seaside. This spot surrounded by the rural greenery of north-west Devon’s Ruby Country is also just 20 minutes from Dartmoor National Park for ambles through atmospheric moorlands. And for those with no wheels? The beach at Bude and the city of Exeter (50 minutes’ drive) are both a cinch to get to on the bus from a stop in the local village of Beaworthy, a 15-minute walk away. Rather not grapple with public transport (or your steering wheel, for that matter)? Stay local with wanders and bike rides along the Ruby Way, a bridleway accessible right from the site that leads onto miles’ worth of paths for walking and cycling. Fishing’s also nearby at the Anglers Paradise lakes (less than five minutes’ drive), and archery, golf and watersports are just some of the other ace activities on offer in the surrounds. Down Yonder has a no-frills feel but does have a toilet block with showers and an outside washing-up sink. For other amenities, the local village of Beaworthy is made up of a pub, post office, newsagent’s shop, gift shop and a fish ‘n’ chips takeaway.

Local attractions

When you’re not learning how to surf on Bude beach (25 minutes’ drive), or shuffling around the shops in the town of the same name, hop it to the hinterlands of Devon in Dartmoor National Park. Access the crag-covered moorlands here from nearby towns like Okehampton (20 minutes), then wander through forests and over grassy grounds past wetlands, rivers and rock formations. Keep your eyes peeled for the famed Dartmoor ponies that potter along the lands here or make your way to the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre, 30 minutes south, to catch sight of other critters including wallabies, fallow deer and owls. For more mammals – plus a little something extra – bound over to The BIG Sheep, 45 minutes away, a farm and amusement park fusion. Standout attractions here include the Ewetopia Indoor Playground and Rampage Rollercoaster; don’t miss the sheep racing shows during the summertime. Driving westward lands you at Tamar Lakes (30 minutes) for watersports, fishing and walking; take note that the activity centre at Upper Tamar organises kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing and windsurfing for visitors.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Simple campsite with friendly host and spotlessly clean toilet block. Our 1 year old loved toddling round the field and watching the cows in the neighbouring field. Great location to explore the area, including the coast. The site is just off a bridleway with a lovely circular walk, make sure you wear decent footwear as despite it being dry the path was soggy in places. Rural location means it was lovely and quiet, with a wonderful dark night sky for watching the stars.

Disliked: Could offer recycling options and the gate on to the site is quite stiff (although nice to know that if the dog had got off his lead the site was secure)

Electric gravel touring pitch (deluxe, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Loved the private facilities with our pitch & the cows in the field next to us. Sharon made us very welcome & we enjoyed the walk to the woods via the bridleway. Facilities were lovely & clean & it was a treat to be able to leave our toiletries in there. Great sunsets from the pitch too.

Electric gravel touring pitch (deluxe, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: We stayed on the hard standing pitch with private facilities - could not recommend enough!! Such a good size pitch, was perfect for our camper van, awning and two dogs - with a lovely grass area and fire pit. Surrounded by lovely views with the added bonus of our own private bathroom and kitchenette. Could not recommend enough! Perfect.

Disliked: Nothing!!

Electric gravel touring pitch (deluxe, private bathroom amenities)

Liked: A lovely welcome from Sharon to this lovely little site. We had the deluxe pitch with sole use of the summerhouse with a shower, loo and washing up facilities all immaculately clean, and a nice added touch of an electric kettle. The gravel pitch was very spacious with a firepit and bbq, and a grassy area for our dog. Te pitch overlooks a field with two very quiet bulls in it. Beautiful sunset views too. Theres a lovely walk into the forest from the site and only 25 minutes drive to the beautiful beaches of Bude. It was unusually quiet for the peak season, we shared the whole campsite with one other unit each night so pleasantly escaped the mania of some other sites during the summer season. It was incredibly quiet which was perfect for us as a middle aged couple. There is nothing on this site for kids, which didn't matter to us, but worth noting for others. We didn't use the communal facilities but looked in and they too were nice and clean. Two loos and one shower on each of the mens and womens, which im sure would be adequate as the site only holds about 15 units in total. (I didn't count so this is a rough guess). Hubby with Vodafone had a good signal, my O2 was hit and miss. Nearest pub was about 20 minutes walk, but we didn't use it so can't comment. Its the same distance to a little store and takeaway, but again we didn't use either. We will definitely return to this little gem as it catered perfectly for two adults and our dog, just wanting some peace and quiet for a few days.

Disliked: There is nothing to disike here.

Electric gravel pitch

Liked: Excellent site with great facilities in a lovely location. Very warm welcome on arrival. Local pub and shop only about a 15 minute walk away - proper old fashioned local’s pub with a very welcoming landlord & landlady. Food very reasonably priced.

Disliked: Was in a rush which meant we arrived late and left early, so the only thing we didn’t like is that we couldn’t stay longer!!
