  • Glamping cabin on a working farm and orchard, overlooking Devon hills
  • Between Dartmoor and the north Cornwall coast; lake 20 minutes' drive
  • On-farm footpath and woodland walks, plus huge garden and firepit
Glamping on a highly scenic working beef and sheep farm, with an apple orchard too: lots of sprawling space, campfires and barbecues, scenic on-farm walking trails, a pretty natural lake, and cosy cabin accommodation to boot... all sounding rather lovely? Tucked half a mile off the A388 down a private lane, this fab farm spot is within a short and simple drive of sand- and sea-themed days and outdoorsy pursuits inland, about halfway between north Cornwall beaches and the tors of Dartmoor. Roadford Lake is within 20 minutes’ drive for windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, climbing, high ropes andwalking and cycling. And the accommodation? It's in comfy insulated pods, all kitted out with double bed and sofa bed, kitchen, dining area, TV and ensuite... and all kept so swishly spotless that 'fantastic', 'excellent' and 'exceptionally clean' are just a few of the accolades from former guests. A large garden, a firepit, a picnic table and your own private parking bay are all outside each pod. Fellow residents on the farm include a flock of friendly Jacob sheep, and a pond is home to a menagerie of wild critters too; first thing to do when you get to your scenic Devon spot is embark on a leisurely wander around the site, via the walking trails around the farm. Should you fancy heading off site in search of fodder, the nearby village of Ashwater has a shop and a country inn that serves food, and there’s premium supermarket at Holsworthy to stock up on posh vittles and bottles of bubbly.

Shepherd's rest camping pod (ensuite)

Liked: Absolutely everything. Alistair and his mum are lovely very welcoming and cant do enough for you. They keep the pods and area around them spotless. Was lovely stay very quiet and peaceful just what we wanted. We took our dog with us and the area around our pod was all fenced and gated so he could just roam around safely. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Local attractions

The beaches, coastal walks and handsome harbours and port towns along the north Cornish coast are within easy reach by car, including the seaside town of Bude and its sandy beaches. Other spots along the coast worth a day out are the surf at Widemouth Bay or Crackington Haven, as well as potters around Boscastle and Tintagel Castle. North of Bude, the National Trust’s Hawker's Hut in Morwenstow, and the cobbled streets, fishermen’s cottages and sea fishing options at Clovelly should also keep you happily occupied... Away from the coast, head inland instead towards spectacular Dartmoor, where wild ponies roam over granite tors among cattle herds and flocks of sheep; while around here, visit the pretty little village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor, as well as other attractive spots like Lydford Gorge, Buckfast Abbey, Clapper Bridge and Wistman's Wood. All sorts of activities are available at Roadford Lake, from windsurfing, kayaking and sailing to high ropes and climbing, plus gentler walks and cycle trails. Other activities in the area include golf and horse riding, with several schools and courses in the local area.
